And it's not like Galileo, Bruno et al were isolated incidents. What about the current bullshit? The Catholic church has some weird ideas about evolution, but almost all the other Churches are dogmatically against a scientific theory because it blows their pet bullshit magic creation story out of the water.

What about *abortion* and birth control? These are tried and tested methods which will have a huge positive impact on the World at large, if the Pope moves his bony arse, but the Church including the Catholic Church rejects because of dogma.

Other than the time they put Galileo under arrest in a beautiful house across the river from the Uffizi in Florence, what scientific knowledge did they suppress in the 16th century and after? (This was the original claim on this thread, that the 16th century was particularly bad.)

Opposition to these based on arguments about values. So you've shifted the argument here. This is the suppression of scientific knowledge, it's judgment about morality. (I happen to disagree with it, if that makes any difference.)

^^ There is no argument that Church affiliated people have significantly contributed to science. Please don't misunderstand. It's obvious that not only Christianity but other religions too, are no significant impediment to being good at science.

The issue is the authoritarian nature of religion itself, which seeks to impose truth rather than discover it. For example the idea that Popes can make infallibly true statements is ridiculous, agreed?

Also, sure, maybe it's a shift away from the science argument to talk about abortion and birthcontrol, but in my mind it's the same. The Church is opposing progress in the name of dogma.

Here you're relying on mind-reading.

How do you know they've set aside their religion? Isn't it possible they believe that by studying the processes of the natural world they are discovering the way that the mind of God acts? This was the stated motivation of many scientists, so for your assertion to be true they'd have to all be liars.

The church is opposing what you believe is progress. But thinking people may disagree.

Where I grew up, "think for yourself" was itself more or less dogma. In my present condition I guess that even this certainty is falling away from me. After all, so many people are bad at thinking for themselves, or genuinely believe they are thinking for themselves but -- by chance! -- end up agreeing with the narrow prejudices of their time and place.

In every case I've seen, when someone tells me to think for myself, they say it because they think I'll end up agreeing with them.

Nobody really creates his own morality from scratch. We start out based on some authority, whether that's conscious and named, or unspoken and hidden. If I had somehow wound up religious, I think it would have been better to be attached to some authoritative tradition, which I could recognize and wrestle with. So that if I disagreed with it I would have to be aware of the reason, and if I fell short of it I couldn't pretend that my failure had in fact been the goal all along. When there are stated external standards, we have something to push against and by which to measure ourselves, even if in the end we choose to disagree.

So of course I don't want any religion to be burning people. But a moral authority which is slow to sway with fashion makes sense to me. I am not a great moral thinker, but there have been such people. If over the course of centuries they have come to certain conclusions, I should be humble enough to recognize that they may have reasons for those conclusions of which I am unaware.

To me such a response is vastly important, and increasingly rare. If I hear that experts (authorities) in literature say that (e.g.) Edmund Spenser is a great writer, even though I read part of his book and found it dull, I am temperamentally unable to declare that all the experts are fools and my own opinion must be right. I suspect that I have missed something. I will look again. In this way I have found many kinds of pleasure that I wouldn't have had otherwise. Granted, in other cases I have had to continue to disagree. But the judgment of ages often turns out to have good reasons behind it, which it requires patience and effort to discern.

Other than the time they put Galileo under arrest in a beautiful house across the river from the Uffizi in Florence, what scientific knowledge did they suppress in the 16th century and after? (This was the original claim on this thread, that the 16th century was particularly bad.)

In the correspondence of Decartes, he notes with shock the condemnation of Galileo and put some of his scientific writing and work on hold to avoid also being arrested and condemned. Galileo then had a chilling effect and you can bet that Descartes was not the only one who felt the chill and abandoned writing about scientific matters that might cause them to come under the scrutiny of the RCC.

Well, it's impossible to know how much of a chilling effect there was. If there was any at all, that's bad. Maybe Galileo should have considered how his own desire to push the roof down on himself would affect others. Had he never heard of the example of Bishop Nicholas of Cusa, astronomer and mathematician of the 15th century? He must have known the book in which Nicholas proposed an infinite non-geocentric universe. Nicholas's terrible punishment was to become one of the pope's most trusted advisors and to retire with honors.

Is there any known case of the Catholic Church prosecuting someone outside Italy? Bruno would have been fine if he had extended his long European tour, but he chose to go back to Italy and stick up his middle finger to the people who were bound to make him stop.

It still looks to me as if science has been perverted by Monsanto a lot more than by the church.
