I got my Great Grandfather's war medals for christmas...
Damn... I haven't cried so much in years.

I loved my great grandfather. He was possibly the strongest man I've ever met, despite how little he spoke. He sat down on his chair in February 1946 and didn't really do much else until he died, but he was still strong and proud. Especially in the stories my Great Grandma told me.
I've always known, even when I knew him as a young boy, that he had been a war hero, not in the sense that all soldiers were war heroes, but that he had done stuff in the war that had saved thousands.
He was in the RAF, 121 Eagle squadron as a point man un-armoured transport driver. Basically he drove into combat zones in Africa, Sicily and Italy to deliver ammunition to the ground fighters as well as set up drop zones for RAF missions.

Thats just about all the details I'm willing to put out publicly right now. I will attempt to get pictures up one day soon.

So ya, you could say my christmas was good. Hope ya'll have/had a good one.

It's good to hear you honor your grandfather's courage.
You prove through your post that you more than deserve his medal.
Enjoy your holidays.

What a great gift to go with your great memories of him.

Shackle their minds when they're bent on the cross
When ignorance reigns, life is lost

Glad to hear you had a good Christmas! No amount of money or gifts can equate something like that Smile

It's thanks to your Great Grandfather and people like him that we are still living in a free and democratic Europe. Take good care of those medals. It might be your touching words or general Christmas-sentimentality, but I feel they should mean something important to all of us.

I want to rip off your superstitions and make passionate sense to you

My dad was stationed in Halifax, Nova Scotia on the eastern coast of Canada when the war ended. He was a few months away from going over-seas. I have wondered that if he had gone over-seas and saw combat, would he have survived and would I have been born? We never know the extent that our actions affect others. Men like your great grandfather did their part to finish the war before more people died. We will never truely know how much we owe them.

When I find myself in times of trouble, Richard Dawkins comes to me, speaking words of reason, now I see, now I see.

James Southgate.

He was shipped off to Morocco in 1939, fought to Tunisia, through Sicily and Italy and finally got to go home to his wife and son in Ipswich, UK in 1946. Though officially part of the 121 Eagle Squadron RAF, his job in logistics meant he was stationed with the army throughout the war.

Unfortunately my information on him is limited. He himself was a very quiet man and despite the amount of time I spent with him as a young lad I rarely got any information from his life story.

These original photos I was given this year as a christmas present along with the thank you letter from Sproughton (the small village outside Ipswich where he grew up) and his service medals.

The first photo I believe is at Monte Casino, the second is his barracks photo from 1939, the third is a photo from Tunisia in north African, and the last was taken in Rome in 1945.

I will hopefully be able to dig up much more information. Since his wife died 3 years ago and the transference of the family possessions to the next generation my grandparents have been digging through and sorting everything he owned. There is little left and hardly any spoken stories. There is mainly the letters between him and his wife sent during the war. I will be down to visit the family house hopefully early next year and will most likely be able to get more photos and maybe his last remaining war journal (though I think my uncle may have destroyed it in spite).

Anyways... Here are the photos.

My uncle is a shit. To put mildly.

He basically murdered his wife in the 70s, hung around making people miserable until the early 00s when he moved back to Ipswich, made more people miserable, then moved into the oldest house in the family when both my great grandparents had died and got rid of at least 75% of stuff that had been collecting up since the late 1800s.
