I'm helping one of my coworkers learn English. I have no problem showing him examples of proper English, although I sometimes have trouble explaining why one is correct.

For example:
Other or another? When and where to use them?
I have no clue how to explain it, but I can give examples all damn day.

You any good at explaining English, or you just a Nazi?
Why can't I be both? Wink

The word "another" simply means "one other", which is why it can only be used when referring to a singular noun. The term "other", on the other hand, can only be used when referring to a plural* noun.

I find that you can explain this grammatical rule in an understandable manner using the following examples:

"There is another way." (singular)
"There are other ways." (plural)

By the way, I've actually never been any good when it comes to theoretical English (i.e. memorizing grammar rules and tenses); I simply know whether or not a sentence is grammatically correct because I have been practicing the language every single day for the last five years or so.

*An exception to this rule exists, however, something I have proven by my use of the phrase "on the other hand" earlier in my post. In combination with the definite article "the", the term "other" can also be used to refer to a singular noun.

You know, your inquiry actually made me buy a $40 book about grammar just now, so thanks for that. Tongue

It's about time that I polish up my writing style since I'm (probably) going to use my mad English skillz in a professional environment soon.
