RE: I'm scared :)
I can't imagine how horrible that must be for you, living in such an insane culture. Well done for having the guts to challenge it! Please do be careful though.

I don't know what it's going to take for things to change. It has to be a gradual change in attitudes I feel. Hopefully each new generation is slightly less extreme than the last. It's going to take a long time. As always, I think education and promoting rational thought are key.

I find it funny that the people that are labeled extremists are really "people who say you should do what a book says and then actually do it" rather than the moderates, who are "people who say you should do what a book says and then make excuses why they ignore most of it". However, it seems to me that your average moderate Muslim still ignores a lot less of their book than the average moderate Christian. The latter has become so watered down now that being a Christian can mean almost nothing. Islam seems far more resistant. I think part of that is how the Quran is designed to be an indoctrination manual, right from page 1. It's a terrifying read, I urge anyone who hasn't experienced it to check out an English translation, for at least the first few pages. Or watch Hugo and Jake analyse it on The Quran Reloaded youtube channel. The bible is more a mish-mash of stories and writings, which happened to gather momentum.

Having said that, please be a moderate though (any religious folks reading). Ignore your books as much as possible. We'll all be better off for it.

I have a website here which discusses the issues and terminology surrounding religion and atheism. It's hopefully user friendly to all.

Unholy I'm so sorry for your troubles, like others I urge you to please please find a way to get out as quickly as you can, not just because you could be killed but also because of how you could be killed, I'm sure you are aware that these extremists like to make their victims deaths as horrific as possible in order to create as much fear in the general population as possible. Good luck and keep posting here when you can.

So how is it going. Are you on your way out of there?

A lot of us have had to pretend until we could remove ourselves from these sort of situations. Keep focused on the goal and you will get there.

RE: I'm scared :)
I just got back to the forum and have just read your thread.
I'm so sorry to hear what a terrible situation you're in. And what terrible situation Bangladesh is in with extremism growing like this.
I hope you can find your way out safely soon. You're welcome in my super comfy country any day (well, at least to most of us. We're fighting a rise in people who want to restrict immigration laws).
I have no idea how islamic extremism is best fought. But you being killed is only going to serve the agenda of the extremists, not help secularism. I don't think anybody has figured out how to effectively fight them yet. But you have to be alive to fight it. From outside the country you can help create more international awareness of islamism in Bangladesh.
I imagine a powerful way to fight fundamentalist religion is to ensure people education and access to knowledge. I don't think it influences the current islamists much, they are an entirely different beast than the average serious muslim, but it can lower the number of moderately religious, who may later become radicalized, I imagine.
I have no idea if these things are true, but my point is that maybe the best you can do to help the situation in your country is to get out in one piece, and then work from the outside with secular humanitarian organizations that help provide education and prevent poverty in Bangladesh. It's not fighting the extremists directly, but it might chip away at the foundation that creates them. You'd be a secular hand reaching out to the people who have not yet been radicalized.

Please keep us updated, if you can, on how you're doing and let us know if there's anything we can do to help.

Well, I knew some people will not believe my stories but it's completely OK. I know these things sound like fiction. People from the west and the civilized world will have hard times to stomach them. Then again, there's a famous saying "Truth is stranger than fiction". Here are some links that would help you out

But yes, that's my entire plan. I want to educate the misinformed people. I want to stop this crazy process of radicalization of nice people. Just by using their weakness and vulnerability, extremists are turning moderate and nice people into fundamentalists and filling them with hatred and bigotry. I want to write for them so that I could educate and help stop this Islamization process and let the world know what's really going on in this country.

and thanks a lot. I'll be regular here Smile
