Vegans taste better generally though, as omnivorous and carnivorous critters are usually way too tough and gamey. Drinking Beverage

Seriously? I can't get Republican vegan in "lean", the butcher shop says they can't find it. Consider

RE: I'm vegan now.
I tried the vegan thing for about 2 years, but it just wasn't my thing.

I do like going to a few vegan restaurants around here though, some good stuff.

Those have always been a source of interest. I mean, if you go all vegetarian -- vegan, in fact -- why would you want to make your food look and taste like meat?

So that people don't know you're vegetarian? Closet vegans?

It seems to me that the beef industry has missed an opportunity here: mock vegetable products. Things that look and taste like celery, carrot sticks, etc., but which are made out of meat protein.

Then carnivores could make people think they were vegetarians. Smile

I know some vegans who eat and like mock meat, but I also know many (myself included) who don't like or eat mock meats. The only mock meat I eat is a veggie burger and if there was a grilled portobello burger on the menu out somewhere, that would be my first choice. I prefer to eat real foods instead of fake ones. That said, I do like my cupcakes and french fries on occasion Tongue, but that's really the only processed foods I eat.

Well, some people still love how meat looks, smells and tastes, but have moral objections to eating it. So being provided with the same thing as far as possible gives them the best of both worlds.

I was in that position when I first became a veggie at an early age.

Now I don't really care what my food looks like or tastes like, as long as it's nice. But I've been vegan for moral reasons for so long now that I've subconsciously come to detest meat. So I'm alright with fake stuff as long as it isn't too convincing, because my body rejects it at that point even though I know it's fake.

I have a website here which discusses the issues and terminology surrounding religion and atheism. It's hopefully user friendly to all.

RE: I'm vegan now.
What put me off vegatarianism for so long was the idea of eating nothing but rabbit food. But I then discovered that I loved to eat beans and rice, root vegetables and lots of spices and meat didn't really add anything to it. We used to have mince every Friday in our chilli and then tried Quorn and realised it was just as good. Mock meat products help with the transition. And why not prefer the healthy mock stuff if it means reducing your chances of suffering from the endemic chronic diseases of affluence?
