RE: I think I'm an atheist...
Hi Leslie, welcome! I recently de-converted and am also in the south. It does feel like coming out of the closet!

Welcome.

I never was religious and felt nothing about xianity until I read the bible. I have since despised and condemned it.

The universe is more wondrous than that portrayed in that idiotic old book.

A female nurse from the South that's just starting the deconversion process? Gosh that sounds like an awfully familiar setup...totally slipped my mind who that reminds me of, not a clue. Angel

Welcome to the nuthouse.

RE: I think I'm an atheist...
My family used to vacation in Lenoir, NC (a family member has a cabin near there). Even when I was a Christian as a kid, back then, those people creeped me out with it.

Being an atheist in the South can be tough. Good luck, and welcome to TTA!

Welcome to the nuthouse.

I'd be quite happy if every medical professional on earth was an atheist.

RE: I think I'm an atheist...
I've not met many medical professionals who were believers. I think just one nurse. And I have been in and out of two hospitals totalling about 9/10 months.

RE: I think I'm an atheist...
When I was in the hospital as a prisoner, in the wake of my testicular cancer radiation (we thought it might have spread to my kidneys, as one of my kidneys was failing and I had to have a biopsy done that day to find out why), I had a Christian nurse and a not-Christian nurse. The Christian nurse was a young one, and when she saw that I had not been fed by my two Blacksuit escorts (massive prison anti-riot team guys who also do escorts when you're taken off the camp for whatever reason) yet they were eating in front of me while I was chained to the bed, she tried to object to the officers about it. One of the officers was displaying a cross necklace identical to the one she was wearing, so she held hers and pointed to his and said what he was doing was "not Christ-like". He was impervious to this argument, of course, so she went and got the Director of Nursing from the next floor.

The DON came in and swore enough at those guys to make a sailor proud, then asked me if I'd rather have a hot meal or a cold one. I told her I hadn't eaten any "human food" in years, so she went and got me a hot meal AND a cold meal from the cafeteria, and charged it to the prison! There was so much food that it barely stayed on my rolling over-the-bed tray. She also looked at the prominent cross worn by the officer and remarked, "This is who no one trusts Christians." In Jefferson City, Missouri. I don't know that she wasn't a Christian, herself, but I know she was awesome, and it really made me feel better to be treated like a full human being for those few hours I was there.

I love nurses. I really do. Every bit as important, both for medical and humanistic reasons, as any MD.
