While I'm inclined to agree with your overall assessment, summarized above. I don't think I find anything particularly wrong with it. At the end of the day our theists vs atheists debates are just a game we play. This behavior is not much different then getting stuck on a particular level in a video game, and coming to a forum asking others who played the game for direction.

And I think both parties at some level acknowledge this, and are all willful participants for the most part. It might not be conducive to a meaningful conversation, but I don't think that's what we're particularly looking for anyway, particularly not with strangers on the internet.

Sometimes over a chess a game you might end up having a meaningful discussion with the person you're playing against, but other times you're just playing chess.
