Icelandic women rock!
Why Thousands of Women in Iceland Left Work Two Hours Early This Week

http://www.theatlantic.com/international...ap/505460/

"On Monday, around 2:38 PM, thousands of women left work early and headed to Austurvollur square in the Icelandic capital of Reykjavik. Punctuality mattered: They were trimming a typical 9-to-5 workday by precisely two hours and 22 minutes, or around 30 percent.

Thirty percent also happens to be the gap in average annual income for men and women in Iceland; for every dollar a man makes, a woman makes 72 cents (other ways of measuring the gender wage gap in Iceland yield smaller percentages, and the gap narrows when considering men and women who do the same sort of work).

Those assembled at Austurvollur shouted Ut, or “Out,” to discrimination against women. They were essentially saying: If I were a man, I might have earned my paycheck by now, so I’m taking the rest of the afternoon off and demanding change.”

Bowing

This whole concept of global gender inequality needs to end. I stand with my sisters on this.

As a side bar I worked as a real estate agent for eight years and one of the reasons you see so many women in the industry doing so well is that the commissions are not based on gender or any other stupid criteria, it's based strictly on transactional volume.

The highest producers year in and year out were women.

Even in Iceland, the gender pay gap isn't about pay but earning. They aren't payed less, they earn less.

Trying to wrap my head around your statement, are you saying Icelandic women don’t deserve equal pay for equal work? That their work is substandard to that of the men?

Zeke, you’re better than that.

No they do, but when you don't work equal, you don't get paid as much. (i.e if a man takes more days off than a woman, he should get the same pay as her and vice versa)
Women do take more days off then men, add to that pregnancy and job choices. The sex pay gap isn't about pay but earning, and there are many reasons for it.

So no it isn't me saying women should earn less, just that when you combine the earnings of women in the country and take into account factors like job choices and time off, you get the 77 cents to the dollar thing.

RE: Icelandic women rock!
I had my ancestral DNA tested recently and discovered I'm genetically 35% Scandinavian-Icelandic. I was blown away! I had no idea! All this time I was thinking my pale skin was from Ireland. I have green eyes and apparently Iceland has quite a lot green eyed people. (Only 2% of the world's population has green eyes.) Of course my green eyes can't see across the damned room because I'm so damned nearsighted. Shocking

Anyway, I'm thrilled to be related to the Icelandic people. Big Grin

He is deformed, crooked, old, and sere,
Ill-fac’d, worse bodied, shapeless every where;
Vicious, ungentle, foolish, blunt, unkind,
Stigmatical in making, worse in mind.

While technically true, you distinction is a bit sementic. Most Icelendic people, like all other people, earnings is based on their wage. The only exception are those who are owning companies, retired or living off investements and annuity. So yes, women are earning less because their wages are lower for a variety of factors, the most important one being that jobs historically occupied by women, and where they still dominate, are underpaid compared to jobs historically occupied by men, and where they still dominate, that require similar amount of schooling (for example social workers vs engineers) or some that even require the exact same diploma with a slight specialisation difference (for example human ressource manager vs financial manager). Add to that work-family conciliation difficulties and inbalance, unnecessary lack of flexibilities in the schedule of many domains and good old fashion discrimination (volonteer or unconcsious) and you pretty much have the entire gender earning pay gap (AKA gender pay gap) explained. Its true thought that claiming equal pay for equal job is reductive when it comes to this issue which is actuaky rather complex. Still, hats off for Iceland, who has seen women's earnings deteriorate since the 2007-2008 financial crisis that hit the country pretty hard.

Freedom is servitude to justice and intellectual honesty.
