Ill open the various bottles to sniff and see if I like the smell. I get a lot of weird looks, and disapproving looks if my girls are along.

When you say "bottles", I'm thinking you're not talking about laundry powder.

But I can't work out whether you are talking about liquid fabric conditioner / detergent or wine?

Consider

I'm in total agreement with Nurse on this one.

I don't know if I'd agree with this one simply because I want to do it as a career (eco tourism) so it doesn't really fit the fantasy aspect of this thread. I might go with either wine or music. The music mainly because then I would have a good war which has always held me back.

You know… you are right. Among all those different bottles, I've also wandered the cleaning isles doing this.

Consider Blink

Maybe I ought to lay off this shopping process and read the labels instead.

Am I supposed to wash each garment separately in its specifically designed detergent?

I'm going to assume a fair amount of your clothing is dry clean only and that you don't have a penchant for wearing lingerie. So the remaining garments you have separate into color groups to wash. I have two laundry detergents - one is "color safe" and the other is specifically for darks.

When my son was a baby I had a specific detergent for his clothing, as well.

Powder is for Luddites. Liquid detergent is much better, both for the clothes and to the nose.

I don't care what the fuck it is, all I want is something I shove in the machine, hit the button and it washes my clothes. If I have to devote any time at all to thinking about it, it's too much.
