In process photos from my major garden clean up in progress.
I mentioned I was doing this recently and Thump asked for pictures. Today I took down a bing cherry tree I probably planted twenty years ago. We don't get enough cold for it to bear much fruit and while it does keep us from being fishbowl by the warehouse across the creek, it has been looking butt ugly for quite some time.

Wasn't sure if I'd be able to do it myself but tah dah! It was 14 inches across the stump at the height I cut it so the stump could hold a bird bath. It was a little scary taking down the thicker sections of trunk but I managed to do it with only the loss of a couple of volunteer Geranium maderense. Oh and I still have all limbs, digits and most of my range of motion in my back.

This is the amount of stump I left for the birdbath. I notched a ring about 4 inches across to hold the base of the bird bath by drilling one inch holes and cleaning it out with a chisel.[Image: 31809592681_70b03164b4_z.jpg]

The birdbath is close to two feet across. I sprayed the edge of the stump with round up to help prevent it from going zombie.[Image: 31116968753_54e2da9e3b_z.jpg]

Some of the fallen pieces.

Stacking up in the bed of the truck. I retained the larger bits of stump, cut it up and stacked it for fire wood. [Image: 31116979583_3745a79cc9_z.jpg]

If Thump hadn't asked I'd have never thought to take these kind of pics. Don't worry I'll eventually have some after pics too.

Good stuff! If you've got a smoker, cherrywood is great for hams and such. Dry it out in square stacks and you'll have good holiday food next year.

Thanks. Hey do you happen to know whether it is better to split the big diameter stuff before it dries or after a year?

Wait - it'll be easier to split.

Thank you Chas, that was my guess but I wasn't sure.

I really like how you made the stump into the base for a bird bath! Very cool idea.

See here they are the bruises some were self-inflicted and some showed up along the way. - JF

Yep, dry wood splits easier.

The first task for today was to finish loading up and then dump the trimmings from the cherry tree.

The second task was to see that the dogs got a walk after short changing them yesterday. That's my stepson's dog in the front left, my two behind and right.

Yeah - I'd like to try that for a sun dial. Consider
