Not just Roman Catholics, the Eastern Orthodox Church also. You need to read about the East-West Schism and the Protestant Reformation.

I am only familiar with RCC since that's the religion I was raised in, I admit my ignorance as far as other faiths go in that regard.

Yeah, I've seen people from Orthodox Christian families say that Catholicism is an offshoot of their religion, not the other way around. All I could think was "Oh! So before the split it was your church that did all the persecution for those first thousand years! There's something to be proud of!"
