RE: Introduce Yourself HERE!
Hi, my name is Sam but I go by Xerox most often around the net. I'm a Young Adult Librarian at a busy public library in Kentucky and also have a background in physics and geology, my BS being in geology from Northern Kentucky University. I was raised Roman Catholic, but began doubting in middle school. I did some exploring in various belief systems, including Wicca, and then ended up giving up faith altogether when I finally realized it was all false. I look forward to interacting here with other free thinkers.

- Sam

How about a wager? A rep point says that in a months time you won't have even been threatened with a ban? And as I'm such a nice guy if you win I'll even throw in an extra point and give you a double Big Grin.
How about posting a link to an all-out video exposé of Palin blowing her foreign relations with the Ruskies in the Politics section. That oughta be worth Brownie points! Your brethren rated it a ban's worth. After they had of course critically inspected the wares, with one hand. Tongue
Dicks over there didn't appreciate detailed political analysis.

Don't see how that could get you banned here. A Canadian holds the ban hammer here, always has, always should, they find USA politics bemusing at best. But repost here for our collective edification and entertainment anyway. Wink

If that's what I think it is then you should be aware that porn is indeed frowned upon here - legal issues are too hairy.

RE: Introduce Yourself HERE!
Oops, guess I missed this thread. Seen as my intro thread was pretty pathetic in terms of content, I'll try to tell a bit more about me here Smile

I'm 19 years of age, studying at university in the UK. I like videogames, I am studying games programming and boy is it fun (/sarcasm)! I have been an atheist ever since I started pondering the question of "does a god exist". The whole bible and christian thing never sat right and I never did take it seriously. I guess I'm fortunate that my parents didn't ram that crap down my throat as a kid. When I really started to think I just found it absurd that a god (at least a god of the bible or anything else human made) would be out there watching over us.

Then I delved into the more scientific based opinions of atheists like Hitchens, Dawkins and others and it just solidified my stance.

I've been posting on similar forums for almost a year now, and was recommended this place by reverendjeremiah. I notice a few familiar faces around here already so Hello from Me Big Grin

RE: Introduce Yourself HERE!
Well, I've gotta be honest, this is going to feel a little like being at an AA meeting for me.

Hi guys, I'm a 24 year old guy. I don't believe in gods. I went to a four year college and have a bachelor's degree and am currently attempting to enlist in the military (I'm subscribed to the MRFF, so I'm not TOO worried about having to hide my atheism). I don't really know how I would describe my religious upbringing. My mother is certainly a Christian and I had to go to Church often as a child, but it was always some pretty boring stuff to me. Moreover, it's always been the fear that gripped me. My entire life I've been pretty easy to scare and the very violent picture that Revelations painted always kept me in fear of a god.

During eighth grade, however, I would fall in love and this would inevitably lead to me choosing the path of atheism (over agnosticism for the same reasons the HP Lovecraft stated). My love, of course, are the stars. Near the end of a semester in my science class, we studied the planets. Now, in elementary school the planets were just names I had to recite and forget about. In eighth grade, though, my entire perspective changed. Reading about Jupiter's moons and Galileo astonished me. These are things I've always dreamed of seeing and still dream today. Before the classes on the single chapter about the planets was over, I had already poured over the entire contents of the astronomy section of the textbook at least three times. Even though I never got a degree in astronomy, even though I can't afford a telescope, and even though I don't think I'm smart enough to ever pursue a career in physics, astronomy remains my one true love. It was my love for astronomy and my understanding that there are countless stars among countless galaxies that would lead me to the conclusion that humans are far less significant than religions purport (that the very stars would create themselves simply to humor us is utterly preposterous).

I may not be too active in the community, due to my intentions to enlist in the military, but I do hope to contribute to some skeptical/scientific topics and hopefully sate my everlasting appetite for knowledge. The name's not intended to be religious, of course, just a pun on "save yourself".

I understand you can book online time on several big(ger) telescopes around the world. So that you can do your own research from the comfort of your own PC. Seems a better deal than having to buy and set up a five or six figure optical (=redundant) telescope and then being stuck with it.
Have you ever tried that?
