RE: Introduce Yourself HERE!
Hello , my name is Douglas Richardson im a 23 year old and have been an atheist for about a year and a half. Ive been listening to the podcasts for about half a year. I was a fundamentalist christian , recruited initially by the first priority after-school bible-study group in my high school , because of this i focused more on preaching in science , math , and history class , making a regular jerk out of myself. Because of this i failed high school due to not focusing on my studies. Because of me doing this in high school , im working on my GED and planning to go to Hillsborough county community collage to work towards getting a high school biology teachers degree , its important for me to cockblock the creationist movement as much as i can , and give kids a better chance. I started having doubts when Bipolarism hit me , and the pastors had no answers , i went to church after church trying to find the truth and answers for what was wrong , eventually settled on the idea that i was demonically "oppressed" and then had a nervous breakdown. After i got treatment , i started questioning my church more , and after a while the pastor and 90 percent of the congregation gave me the cold shoulder and i left to do an in-depth study of my bible , and what i found horrified me. Being a compassionate , caring individual with a very strong moral compass , i couldent square what i considered right and wrong with the bible , at age 22 , the day before my birthday i burned my study bible and did a study of different belief systems , moving from paganism , to satanism , then rejecting the whole thing and leaving those kind of belief systems all together. Im very open about my atheism , my family being as loving as they are did not disown me , but they are very wary and give me "the look" when i try to bring the subject up. I hope my intro wasnt too long and i hope everyone has a very good holiday season , filled with laughter , and enjoyment with friends and family.

Hello my fellow human beings. I am not an atheist but have seen some comments that were interesting and I hope that I could respond to at least some in the future. If this is not allowed, then I'm sure moderator will inform me.

RE: Introduce Yourself HERE!
Hello all! I am 35 years old. I work full time and also go to school online. I gave up believing in God in high school. I don't think I have ever verbally announced that I am an atheist but wouldn't deny it if someone asked. Whether I believe in God just hasn't come up.

I stumbled upon the Thinking Atheist about a week ago and have been devouring the podcasts and videos. I thought I would give the forum a try so here goes nothing!

RE: Introduce Yourself HERE!
Why hello there. I'm a 17 year old American. I was a very devoted/indoctrinated christian until high school. I began to study biology, chemistry, and physics, as most teens do, and found that my beliefs didn't match up to the facts. I began reading the bible trying to find any kind of explanation for this, but found only brutality, fairy tales, and countless circular arguments. Then, I saw a quote that made me realize that no matter how much I wanted to believe in god, there couldn't be one. The quote is from a philosopher named Epicurus, and it says "Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?" That's about all, I think.

Welcome aboard new people! Differing opinions are valued here for those of you concerned about that. If someone doesn't agree they will say so but your opinion will not get you banned. No porn, spam or threats as those will.

RE: Introduce Yourself HERE!
Hello everyone!

My name is James, I'm a 22 year old living in the UK and I consider myself as one of the lucky ones who have been an atheist since birth. My father has always been derogatory about religion and so I grew up considering it to be something silly that some people liked to do and nothing to be taken seriously.

That changed a couple of years back when a facebook friend posted a video by potholer54 entitled "Darwin said this, Darwin said that . . ." I found it hilarious at first that people actually believed this crap and didn't accept evolution as a fact, but as I watched more videos and checked out other channels like AronRa, Thunderf00t and then TheThinkingAtheist came to realise just how widespread the problem of religion was, especially in American, Saudi Arabia etc, and though I still find the stupidity of creationists amusing it is also amazingly depressing.

I've been subscribed to the youtube channel and the facebook page for a year and a half or so and finally decided to join the forums recently, mainly because I think my friends are getting sick of my occasional rants on religion so I came in search of like minded people.

RE: Introduce Yourself HERE!
Ouch! Sounds like you have had a tough go of things but sounds like you have found the right path. It's never too late to go to school. I'm 35 and have a BS in Secondary Education. Teaching wasn't for me but maybe you will enjoy it. The over reliance on standardized testing killed it for me. I'm sure that slashed budgets have made teachers' jobs even harder. Good luck in your studies!

But as if to knock me down, reality came around
And without so much as a mere touch, cut me into little pieces
