RE: Introduce Yourself HERE!
Hi everyone. I'm Jules, from Ottawa (ish) Canada. Raised Roman Catholic but not practicing, became an atheist at 15, following in my brother's footsteps.

Been a listen we since January, and logging in now cause I've been listening to the old podcasts and came across the "facepalm" one (nov 8 2010), and I really want to talk to Ally, the author of the closing email... Figured I might get lucky if she's on here...

Welcome Smile Unfortunately... unless one of our regulars is Ally... I doubt you'll get lucky...

But our regulars... you don't want to talk to them. They're all m-m-m... m-a... mm-ma... m-m-m-ad.

RE: Introduce Yourself HERE!
Hi there, I'm Inquisitive and I'm well, curious. A lot of posters expected that, I suppose. Anyway, family went to church on Sundays (Protestant, I think), didn't really think about it, more an opportunity to socialise and read out from a big book on a podium. I gave up some time in my teens (more an excuse to have lie-ins than anything), read some Dawkins, said 'okay'. Then I moved between beliefs a few times, settled on agnostism and humanism. Joined an online political forum, heard arguments from both sides. Also looked at fstdt's top 100 quotes and died laughing.

So, I'm here, but there's still...one or two issues most atheists seem to share which I disagree with. Hopefully I can post here, ask some questions, gain some clarity.

RE: Introduce Yourself HERE!
Hello. I'm Vagas and have been searching my entire life (40 years) for truth and understanding. I have dabbled a bit in almost every religion you could think of, including some from the "Left-Hand" path. However the last couple of years, I have become tired of trying to understand the minds and theories of others and decided to finally follow my own mind. Luckily I stumbled upon The Thinking Atheist and have been an avid listener for about a year now. So, I signed up to discuss, debate, and listen to others who seem to follow the same line of thinking which has helped open my eyes. Thanks!

RE: Introduce Yourself HERE!
I'm an American suburban mom, 2 kids, 1 dog, mini-van with kid magnets on the back, yep, that's me. Smile

I was raised in a non believing family that never really discussed religion. I don't remember having questions as a kid, if I did, they were probably ignored. I only attended church for weddings and funerals, and sometimes a Christmas mass with highschool friends. My Mom was raised Catholic and she had no desire to go back to church. My Dad was against all the flavors of religion equally. My siblings have all taken different paths, usually following spouses. My oldest brother is atheist, possibly my sister (she seems to like the warm fuzzy feeling that a god provides-but doesn't follow any particular path). I have a brother who is a practicing Catholic.

My husband was raised with over the top religious parents that for the most part I guess are considered Southern Baptist. My husband doesn't go to church but he's still a firm believer. When we moved south to NC it quickly became obvious that church was all everyone talked about.

We tried a non denominational church for awhile, but after the kids came along it was too much of a cult atmosphere for me. I had a 'keeping the peace' belief for awhile. It wasn't impacting my life much, so I didn't bitch about it.

Then my parents died.

And when that happens it gets you thinking.

and now I'm here.

My husband isn't thrilled, but not surprised. We have always been respectful to each others thoughts and feelings. As for the kids- I am teaching them that they can believe whatever they wish but they should learn about it, question it, and look for evidence of truth. My oldest is in 4th grade has always questioned....she would quiz the pastor at preschool. LOL. My youngest is more of mystery. I think she feels she is abandoning her Dad if she doesn't join his team. She will find her way-I see how she is beginning to debate other topics with her sister. Wink

wow. that was long for an intro. Shocking

R~

RE: Introduce Yourself HERE!
Hi. I'm an old guy. When I was about 7 my mom accepted the offer of a "free home Bible study" from Jehovah's Witnesses. I did as I was told for about 17 years or so, and then turned my back on it. I became an ordained minister of Jehovah's Witnesses when I was 14 via the act of baptism. Over the passing years I have also been ordained by the Universal Life Church and the Church of the Sub-Genius. As you can tell, I take religion very seriously. I now tell people that I am a "non-practicing Atheist."

I am available for any weddings, etc., as long as they take place on my property at a time convenient to me. Tomorrow looks good, after that it will be a while. Please try the veal while you're here, I hear it's very good.

I try to put the MENTAL into fundaMENTALism.

Smile I just came to the site to address the list of alleged contradictions for my site BereaWiki.com and figured I would answer a few here on the forum while I'm at it, as it bothered me sincere questions weren't being answered. I strongly believe alleged contradictions are simply evidence the Bible contains complex riddles that require serious study/research, reading comprehension, and creative thinking to recognize possible solutions... not to mention prayer since only God is perfectly wise and can inspire us to see some of the answers. Anyway, I like the spirit of the site here more than the Infidels list, so thought I would drop by and say hello, address a few alleged contradictions while I'm around.
