I have been visiting this forum for a while now. I think I have read almost every post. I find this site to be a breath of fresh air. I have hung out on freerepublic for many years but I just can't stand all the religious nuts on there any more. Been told I rely too much on reason too many times. Every science thread becomes a debate about evolution and the anti-science mentality over there is stunning.

In addition to being an atheist I am an Objectivist so I am used to being hated. I have two sets of horns instead of one LOL. That's OK I can take it. I enjoy debating though I am not great at it. I have very much enjoyed reading the debates on this forum. I don't expect I'll post very much since I don't have much free time and I don't like to get into debates unless I can finish them but I would like to comment occasionally.

I don't ever try to convert people but if I'm asked about it I tell people what I believe and why. I believe that reason is man's only tool for gaining knowledge and that it is immoral to accept anything on faith.

Welcome to the forum.

Welcome :) what's an objectivist ?

Objectivism is a philosophy that holds that existence exists independent of anyone's mind, that reason is man's only means of knowing reality. Its ethics is rational egoism and its politics is laissez faire capitalism. It's the exact opposite of "progressivism" or Socialism. It calls for a complete abolition of the initiation of force, any kind of mysticism, any kind of sacrifice whether of one's self to others or others to one's self. It holds that every man is an end in himself and not the means to anyone's end. It demands that men trade value for value to mutual benefit. It holds that man's life is the standard of value and that one's own life is one's highest moral purpose.

It is basically the Declaration of Independence without the creator part. All men are equal, they have certain inalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Do not lose your knowledge that man's proper estate is an upright posture, an intransigent mind and a step that travels unlimited roads. - Ayn Rand.

Don't sacrifice for me, live for yourself! - Me

The only alternative to Objectivism is some form of Subjectivism. - Dawson Bethrick

Sounds fairly practical. I'll stick to my own WTFist beliefs though... but I believe we have much common ground Smile

RE: Introduce Yourself HERE!
Hi everyone, Checking in front the good ole U.S. of A. Background is one of thorough indoctrination in the Christian eulogy's. Decades of study, dedicated service and many dollars have brought me to the world of realities where I find myself most comfortable.
A steady listener of The Thinking Atheist broadcast for some time now. Thought I'd find your Forum interesting and hopefully fun. Glad to be joining you all. Hobo

Been following The Thinking Atheist for about 2 years now. Thank the GSM for Seth! His podcasts help keep me sane. Live in a very conservative area of Florida - well, Florida is all conservative except for Miami and Tampa/St. Pete. Anyway, looking forward to contributing and reading.

RE: Introduce Yourself HERE!
Been a lurker here for a couple months and decided to get involved so I can gain more knowledge, discuss (and vent) on topics that I am passionate about. Was raised a catholic Italian in the Northeast and relocated to north Texas 5 years ago when I was 41. As you could imagine, I am surrounded by all sorts of nonsense in all parts of my daily life here. Great to have this site as an escape to reality when I need it.

RE: Introduce Yourself HERE!
Hello everyone, my name is James, I am 22, originally from Chicago. I currently live in Jacksonville, Florida. I am also a college student who is currently enrolled in pre-engineering, and currently working very hard on getting a double Bachelor's of Science major in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. I have always had a great interest in building things since I was a kid, and also, in the field of Astronomy and Astrophysics. Carl Sagan, and Dr. Tyson are pretty much one of my favorites in the fantastic world of science. I have also played musical instruments for more than 13 years. I also like running, reading, and having intellectual debates. Aside from that, I also consider myself an Atheist and a Humanist, and I think Engineering with also be a support in my world-view. I look forward to meeting new likeminded Atheists (locally and internationally), and keeping up to date with this awesome website! Peace! Cool

"Science is much more than a body of knowledge. It is a way of thinking. This is central to its success. Science invites us to let the facts in, even when they don’t conform to our preconceptions." -Carl Sagan
