Welcome!

I do have one question: does your user-name mean red (rouge) Jew, or is it supposed to be rogue Jew? Wink

RE: Introduce Yourself HERE!
Hi I'm from West London

Having atheist parents but being put into a religious boarding school at a young age, has maintained my atheism but elevated my fascination with religious culture. I'm conflicted over religion as a hugely significant part of positive human culture or as a continual bane to humanities progress.

RE: Introduce Yourself HERE!
Concord here.

It's not my real name but a handle I've used since people called internet names handles.

I have been an atheist(officially) for about 5 years. The process started long before that. I was raised to be a Christian in a Methodist church until about age 18 - 20. I can't say exactly when I became an atheist for sure- I can honestly say I was a believer and my church experience wasn't that bad compared to some. But I always had questions about the Bible and why we believe when there are thousands of religions and thousands of denominations. Why did we have to dress up when God knows what we look like naked? Why didn't the Bible mention dinosaurs or help me with algebra?

I started to doubt when I went off to college at University of the Arts in Philadelphia. My roommates were a wild and obnoxious bunch. One in particular was into philosophy and was the first outspoken atheist I had met. He challenged my beliefs, told me I only believed because my parents did. At first, I hated him for that and while we often got along well enough I was exposed to all kinds of debauchery- under-aged drinking, weed(I didn't smoke then- but I do now recreationally), porn, and rebellious antics- but I always thought back to that time.

I don't want to go into more detail- I could write a book and working on one as my official coming out announcement but it is not finished. It took me another 10+ years to figure out who I am- I played with tarot cards, oujia boards was fascinated with
ghost stories and such. I went on a kind of "spiritual journey" which resulting in me declaring (to myself at first) that I didn't believe in God. There was nothing spiritual or magical going on. It was all just part of a crazy life. I haven't gotten all I want out of life yet. I have struggled with depression and delusions that I think were part of my letting go of unsubstantiated beliefs and misconceptions.

The Thinking Atheist has helped along with other programs such as The Atheist Experience and books by Sagan, Paine, Dawkins, Hitchens, to become more comfortable and stronger atheist.

RE: Introduce Yourself HERE!
Atheist since birth, religious belief is completely foreign to me. Politically, I consider myself a left leaning centrist and I would have joined this forum two years ago but I have a bad tendency to procrastinate.

"Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?”

RE: Introduce Yourself HERE!
Hey, I'm marc :3 I've been a closeted atheist for about three years, and plan on coming out the moment I have a place of my own, or turn 21. Whichever comes first aha.

I'm thinking about starting a tumblr for closeted atheists, if you're interested in also being a manager of the tumblr with me give me a holler or whatever!

It's only a debate if both parties are willing to let each other's opinions change their own.
If you aren't willing to change in light of learning more about what you fight for, what the hell are you doing expecting the other party to want to change?
