RE: Introduce Yourself HERE!
My wife is willing to concede up to 6000 years (not bad, since the kids only believe in 5773 years). Oh yeah, a young earth is embraced in our town, although there is an equal faction that goes, "Well how long is a yom anyhow. We'll make it a half a billion years", which works for the scientists and educated professionals who also live here. But the kollel guys, no way. A yom is a day, period. Now keep in mind that there is stuff they are uncomfotable with, like Noahs Ark, Adam and Eve, etc. But what people typically do is speak of it academically and never speak of the improbability of it all.
There is a teaching - Not a single blade of grass rises up unless an angel that sits upon it shouts "Grow". Meaning, its all under supernatural source and supervision.
I'm the family apikoris, so I keep itreigned in a bit unless I am talking to another one!

RE: Introduce Yourself HERE!
Hello

I've been lurking here for a rather long time (a year or so) and have been enjoying the forum. I finally decided "register", something I tend to do only under protest, but occasionally I've felt like saying something so... hopefully can contribute to the fun discussion.

I'm 53, Canadian and a heathen.

RE: Introduce Yourself HERE!
Afternoon, everyone. I've been lurking a bit, and finally decided to throw my name into the mix, as it were.

My friends call me Emma, and I'm living in the not-very-sunny-today land of tea-crazy called Tucson, Arizona. I'm originally from Michigan, and so I get called a liberal socialist, a lot! Usually, I just grin and say, "Thanks!" I'm a writer, thinker and tend to be a very greeny-hippie kind of person; I am generally very introverted [these intro things always kill me, I tell you!]

Looking forward to seeing/hearing from everyone and I hope I can always enhance the conversation!

RE: Introduce Yourself HERE!
Hi. I am a 26 year old male from the UK, currently a truck driver but going to university in September to study a music degree and ultimately become a music teacher. I have been a full atheist for about 10 years. Previous to this I just got on with life and didn't really think about religion. I finally became an atheist when I got my first telescope and realised what was out there and how meaningless everything around was. I used to hear people saying 'what's the meaning of life?', and my honest answer is, there is no meaning, we are just here, we just happened... Most religious people feel the need to believe in something bigger and higher than us in order to get through life, and the thought of afterlife etc... Even though I don't believe there is a meaning to any of this, it doesn't mean I don't love people, enjoy life, want happiness and all the rest of it. I suppose in a 'Christian' way of treating people the way you want to be treated yourself is how I live, not because I'm religious, but because it makes my life nicer and easier. I'm fairly quiet about being an atheist and don't force it upon other people, unlike religious people knocking at my door telling me to believe in 'God'. I simply say, 'show me some evidence that he actually exists and I'll join your cult right now... So 'God' makes absolutely everything happen does he? Even that tree that fell on my car last week? No I don't think that could have been him because at that exact moment, he was in Africa giving aids to babies... I rest my case

RE: Introduce Yourself HERE!
Hi,
My name is Raoul and I began my deconversion process about a year ago after wasting 25 years in what I call the xtian cult. I'll spare you the details probably because most of you have gone through the same things I did more or less. I'm working on a book tentatively titled 'Christianity - the Sociopathic Cult'. It will have various short stories which support my premise that Christianity, in addition to being a cult like any other, is also sociopathic in nature. The bible teachings along with the behavior of many of the Christians actually encourages a sociopathic nature in the followers. 'You must hate your father, mother, etc', 'Let the dead bury the dead', et. al. are very simple examples of the teachings that support this nonsense.
I also have a YouTube channel where I publish videos taking them on from time to time. I hope to share some of this with you over here, pending approval from the moderators here. I am very aggressive in my interaction with 'them' to which I make no apology because I subscribe to the late Christopher Hitchens' view. IE: treat religion with the contempt and distain it so richly deserves.
During the past year of my deconversion I've literally inhaled many books from noted non-theists and atheists. The last one read was Seth's (Deconversion - the journey from religion to reason). When I was in the cult I actually was an apologist who debated atheists. Being on the other side now I see that the games and word twisting the apologists do with me are exactly the same things I used to do with atheists. So I'm familar with the tricks and have used them in various informal debates done via YouTube.
Anyway, that's enough about me - I don't like talking about myself since I find myself boring at times. LOL Anyway, I look forward to being over here and thanks for reading this.

"that which can be asserted without evidence can be dismissed without evidence" Christopher Hitchens
