Is Life a Simulation?
Is life a simulation, and if so how could we ever know? We're like fish in water, never know what it is like--that it is wet.

RE: Is Life a Simulation?
If life was a "simulation", such a notion would imply an ulterior purpose.
I don't think that thought is even worth entertaining since it would't matter to us.

A new type of thinking is essential if mankind is to survive and move to higher levels. ~ Albert Einstein

Anomalies could be one way. Isn't that the way they do it in The Matrix and Dr. Who and all those other sci fi shows? Glitches?

Is life a simulation of what? What is it an imitation of?

Yep, and this begs the question of whether it would even matter.

Existence is all we know -- whether the inputs to our perceptions are direct or indirect, existence is all we have to deal with.

Unless the simulation is stopped, or glitches, or the programmer starts talking to us, whether or not "reality is real" is beside the point.

If the simulation were imperfect enough to "glitch" in some obvious way, the problem is: if it did that, then the glitches would be normal, part of everyday reality, and you wouldn't know they ARE glitches.

So the only glitch that would matter is one that's never happened before, perhaps because the "computer" running the "simulation" is breaking down. Or a glitch that is suddenly fixed, causing some of the absurdity of the human condition to suddenly make sense, I suppose.

Makes one wonder how many times this universe has been recompiled and restarted from the top ;-)

Code:
Public Class Universe Inherits Everything
   Const TIME_RESOLUTION = TimeResolution.FemtoSecond;

   Public void Start() {
      Time = New Timer(TIME_RESOLUTION);
      Time.AddEvent(BIG_BANG);
      Time.Start();

       For Each (tick t in Time) {
          event = Time.GetEvent();

             select event.Type {
               case EventType.HeatDeath : Exit For
               case EventType.StarBirth: star = new Star(Randomize(StarType));
               // TODO: Handle planet formation, biological life, etc.
               // TODO: Make convincing backstory / explanation for sentient life
               //            to rationalize its existence with
            }
       }
   }

End Class

Or they programmed non-linearity into it just so they could easter egg themselves for shits and giggles.

Finally, somebody who puts the damn braces where they belong! Visual Studio keeps insisting on fucking that up and it drives me insane.

I prefer to treat it like a role-playing game. I'm the main character and everything is for my entertainment.

Those glitches are now called Quantum Mechanics. The programmers never thought we would be able to investigate reality at that level of resolution, so they just swept all their inconsistencies under the micro-carpet.
