Self reflection is not a theme of the masses. Angel

Imma make a religion outta it, to protect atheism from the theological dark times. If we're talking about god, we're not really talking about anything. Considering I'm preaching to a bunch of aggies, there's always a 1% to stick an lc into. Oh yeah, besides "little creep" lc stands for "least common." I'm sure there's more...

I think there's an ontological "proof" there waiting to be born, lcg. Big Grin

I will keep my opinion to myself for a bit so I don't influence the first few comments. Surprise me.

Let me get this straight. You're asking if the name given to the position taken by those who fail to detect whatever it is a god is supposed to be is "worth it"? Not quite sure how to respond. It probably depends on whether one felt their life was worth it before the question concerning the supernatural thingy came up. Me, I'm pretty content. So pausing to express "dafuq?" to the god question doesn't really impact my life satisfaction one way or the other.

Man got to sit and wonder 'why, why, why?'
Tiger got to sleep, bird got to land;
Man got to tell himself he understand.”

RE: "Is atheism worth it?"
Atheism is simply one of several organic outcomes of being a person who does not afford belief to things that are not substantiated. Asking whether it's "worth it" is a non-sequitur, like asking if eating dinner was pink or if voting is wet.

Choosing the epistemology you'll live by is all about maximizing your ability to predict and explain outcomes. So the question is not, "was it worth it", but "did it make sense"?

RE: "Is atheism worth it?"
I must say the question is confusing to me too. "worth it"? worth what?

Let me change the words a title. Whats the price for listing the information we have, describing a mechanism, a story line that offers explanations, and makes correct predictions?

err, i don't know ... a better understanding of how the universe works?

RE: "Is atheism worth it?"
Atheism is its own reward. Once one starts to reason through the lies and propaganda, and realizes that its all made up, that there is no heaven, no hell, no eternal life, no spy eye watching one's every move and sentencing one to eternal punishment for a slight, it is a huge relief. One must still go through the process of throwing off the old wet cloak of bad teaching, and that can take awhile.

I look at xtianity as torture porn (the cross) and a zombie culture (resurrection, the cracker and wine). I actually look and SMH when I see it, now.

As far as "worth it" from the perspective of a young person dependent on adults for their sustenance, that's a whole different bucket of worms. Would that adults could be adult about what their children hold as a value. I know that when my eldest son said he didn't believe, I was OK with it, though I was disappointed. It wasn't until probably 6 years later that I admitted it to myself...though I myself had had doubts for decades. It was just one of those social constructs that took me awhile to get past.

RE: "Is atheism worth it?"
That's a stupid loaded question.

Atheism isn't "worth" anything, Atheism is simply the only logical outcome when presented with all the evidence and proof.
"Worth it" doesn't even factor into the equation. Atheism isn't really a "choice", it's just the way things are.

There's no word for not believing that there's a giant inflatable bouncy castle orbiting Saturn. We don't have a label for that, not one we go around call ourselves anyway (except maybe 'sane' but that doesn't refer to my specific example only). Yet we have a label for not believing in bullshit fairy tales made up by middle eastern goat fuckers in the bronze age. It's stupid, there shouldn't be a need for such a label but yet here we are. So again, "worth it" doesn't even factor into the equation.

RE: "Is atheism worth it?"
I'm convinced that the question comes from a theist who is saying "You get to live without the constraints that faith puts on *me*, but you get no reward, and you go to hell". The question is (from a theist's view), was the freedom worth it, in light of the (claimed) outcome. It's a warped rehash of Pascal's Wager.

Insufferable know-it-all.Einstein God has a plan for us. Please stop screwing it up with your prayers.
