I think it enhances the experience in some ways.

I can gape in awe at a medieval cathedral and consider the motivations of the builders without believing the delusion.

Moved, yes but also a bit sickened. I cannot look at the beauty of the architecture and not feel for all the pain and suffering that went into creating this and for whom. I just can't. Nor could I look at the pyramids and not feel for all the slaves that suffered and died for it.

Those monuments and grand structures came at a price. I just can't see them without the taint of human suffering that came with them.
