That is unfortunately not possible because most effective religious techniques (let us call them "credit porn") require large groups to work. Think of Mass for example.

To understant how this works, one may look at another kind of non-religious credit porn: sports fandom. Could you convince all the supporters of a given team that they need to watch the game alone, each in front of his TV, and never talk about it afterwards?

Indeed. Just look at Charismatic church services. They are obviously having a blast.

Religion is a kind of credit masturbation. Religion is about faith, about trusting someone. Religion is to faith/trust (an ordinary kind of feeling we experience all the time in our daily lives) what masturbation is to ordinary sex.

We cannot live without masturbation. All kinds of masturbation. Our way of life is essentially unnatural and we cannot go back. It is this very unnaturalness which is the core of being human. In order to cope, we need to masturbate.

Faith/trust or "credit", as I prefer to call it, is a very complex kind of human mental feature. It encompasses a great many aspects of our lives and culture. And there also countless ways we can masturbate this mental feature of ours. Some have beneficial side effects, some have harmful ones. All religions are credit masturbation techniques. We can call them "credit porn". But there are many others. Like being a sports-team fan, or putting selfies on facebook, or being a snob and doing our best to attend ultra-select parties, and so on. Which ones are good, which ones are bad? That is the question.

Great Darwin! I have no memory of this at all! Who was this and when was it?

But all this talk of masturbation... I might step out of the room and make myself...happy...

Religion is not like masturbation. I don't have to pay someone to masturbate.

See below signature.

.......................................

The difference between prayer and masturbation - is when a guy is through masturbating - he has something to show for his efforts.

In theory no, but most of the time you will pay for porn.

With religion it is the same. You can pray alone. But most people prefer attending a Church, which is a provider of "credit porn".

If you define masturbation so broadly than yes, Religion would be masturbation so would be what you (and I) are doing right now. We are masturbating intellectualy. And maybe, just a little bit, masturbating our ego by feeling superior (just a tiny little bit) to theists.

Freedom is servitude to justice and intellectual honesty.

I never understood why people pay for porn when it is absolutely free. Not one penny of mine has every been used to buy porn.

Church is a different story. Fucking damned I wish I had it all back.

Exactly.

Religion is just a subset of the much wider category of "credit masturbation"
