Is this a "thing"?
Numerical object recognition:

i.e.

Like if you look at a group of objects and automatically know how many there are without counting. You know what the number "looks" like.

For instance, you see three dogs. You don't have to count them because you recognize what three dogs look like.

I've noticed mine goes to about seven before I have to count the objects.

Hopefully, I'm explaining this coherently.

Depends on how they're grouped...

But yeah totally a thing.

But as if to knock me down, reality came around
And without so much as a mere touch, cut me into little pieces

Seems ok. I know that cats do it - they apparently count to three before they become befuddled and have to start again. It most likely has to do with pattern recognition.

Does it trouble you, Kingsy or are you just curious?

Just curious. It was something I happened to notice.

Our brains do seek pattern.

The interesting thing is ... patterning can be "altered" but, can only be altered if it is recognized as "a thing".

Sounds are weird too. Like, shortly after the event, I can go back and count how many times the clock chimed even though I wasn't listening or counting. It's like re-playing an audio tape. Worked for how many shots were fired, too.

Yup, it's "a thing". In fact,

even animals besides humans can do it.

RE: Is this a "thing"?
Yup. Just one of the many shortcuts your brain uses. Not unlike the way your brain reads words rather than reading individual letters. Once it gets the hang of it, it just goes "Ah, that's three dogs. Good, I don't have to take my mittens off."
