What is "the problem"? Famine? Poverty? Violent reactions to famine and/or poverty?

Would "the problem" be better characterized as "the excuse", so someone or something else takes responsibility for the demise of certain portions of the species?

Interesting. In Jared Diamond’s book Guns, Germs and Steel he talks on how the change from hunter/gatherer groups to sedentary agricultural communities spawned the race to control more land and the people to work the land giving rise to kingdoms and ways to control the populace.
