It was a Miracle!
...Or at least, that's what I would have called it a few years back.

This afternoon I was on the freeway, minding my own business whilst maneuvering through the infamous Downtown Corridor, Seattle's version of a logjam, when I noticed a car 2 lanes over creating beautiful sparks. My observation turned to consternation as I realized the pretty sparks were being created by the left rear wheel becoming detached from the axle.

Quickly I prepared to spring into action: Hands positioned at 10 and 2. A quick glance to the left to check for an escape route. A reflex glimpse at the rear view mirror to make sure I had breaking distance behind me, having already surveyed the relatively empty lane in front of me. In the split second it took for all of my cat-like reflexes to prepare for the worst, I looked back at the car to see that indeed the wheel and some sort of rod thingymajig had broken free from the car and was headed across two lanes, on a direct intercept course with your beloved author.

The car to the right of me floored it and made it past unharmed. Then it was my turn to make a decision. Would the wheel stop before reaching me? No. Could I hit it and be okay? No. Could I floor it and speed past it before it reached my lane? Not in my jalopy! So with what could have been my last breath, I screamed my battle cry: Not in the face! and hit the well-worn-in-need-of-a-brake-job-brakes and watched the wheel and thingymajig attached to hit roll on by me to wreak it's havoc upon the defenseless guard rail. (Those last 3 words are rather ironic).

I then hit the gas and got my ass out of the vicinity ASAP. About ten minutes later, after the adrenaline had started to subside and my pulse had dropped to a reasonable rate, I started to think about the "what ifs."

What if I had left a split second earlier from home? What if I hadn't made that lane change? What if there was a car directly behind me. After going through several scenarios, I thought, this is stupid, "what ifs" don't matter because they didn't happen. It was then I realized I hadn't said, "Thank You, Lord!" That would have been my first thought up until a few years back. I would have reported to anyone I knew that the Lord had guided the wheel past the grill of my car and saving lives in the process.

I guess it's a miracle that I didn't attribute this as a miracle. Big Grin

RE: It was a Miracle!
Thing is when people do ya kinda feel like a douche saying 'yeah but it's completely random'... and it's hard for them to understand where you're coming from anyway, 'cos they're *so* convinced in their own mind that it *was* a miracle, so when you start warbling about confirmation bias etc they kinda switch off. On their part they would say... "Yeah it's totally a miracle but some people are so convinced that God doesn't exist that they resort to all kinds of absurd rationalisations to explain how this could have been a random event"...

PTL it wasn't the face! Phew! [Image: phew.gif]

A guy from my project in Rio told me how once he left later for something and the bus he was supposed to take, but missed, got stopped by gang members and set fire on. He said it was god preventing him from dying. Left me wondering what horrible thing the young girl who did die had done to deserve it...
