(CNN) - The federal government shut down at midnight Friday as senators continued to scramble to reach a deal to fund the government.

This is the first modern government shutdown with Congress and the White House controlled by the same party, and it comes on the one-year anniversary of President Donald Trump's inauguration. Trump's White House however immediately blamed Democrats for the shutdown.”

Yeah that's the part of this I don't understand, if the Republicans control all three branches, why did they need to negotiate anything with the dems?

Because they cannot pass a federal budget with the bullshit work-around rule (reconciliation) that lets them get away with only 50 senate votes to pass something.

I imagine this is the Democrats going 'Oh, is your house on fire? So sad...' as they do the same thing the Republicans did for the past 8 years, sans the racism and bigotry.

Because the Senate requires 60 votes to pass the stopgap rather than a simple minority.

He just wants it to pass faster. Tongue

The dems know that DACA will never get dealt with properly if they don't do it now while they have some leverage.

But that would mean they would have to, *gasp*, compromise. Gasp
