Jesus Nuts or the Son of God? Two INCOMPATIBLE ideas in the New Testament
Two
totally incompatible ideas here.

Mark
3:21 –

When
his family heard about this, they went to take charge of him, for they said,
“He is out of his mind."

Versus

Luke
1:

29
Mary was greatly
troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be.30 But
the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with
God.31 You will be with child and give birth to a son, and
you are to give him the name Jesus.32 He will be great and will be
called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his
father David,33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his
kingdom will never end."

So, Mary knew she
was going to give birth to the son of god..but later she thought he was crazy?

Please! This is
just one more of a zillion inconsistencies in the New Testament. If she thought
he was crazy..then that’s the same as saying “GOD is Crazy” assuming she knew
he was the son of god who is god…aka trinity jargon. If you KNEW he was to “reign over the house of Jacob forever; his
kingdom will never end." Then why
would you ever question him??

Apologists dance
all around this but common sense prevails here. ONE of these two gospel accounts
is nucking futz. If I were a betting man I’d say the Luke account is more
likely the one ‘of legend’ and Mark’s account is most likely to have actually
happened (if there in fact was a historical Jesus)

Big IF. IF anything, I'd say an amalgam of local guys and a few, somewhat far reaching folk heros, and maybe a few daring feats of an ancient god or two.

I'm not big on the assumption there was an historical Jesus, but I am big on the notion that it was set up to look that way. You know, urban legend begets urban legend... becomes legendary fact... becomes history. It's tough to stop a good meme, huh? Wink

I think in the end, I just feel like I'm a secular person who has a skeptical eye toward any extraordinary claim, carefully examining any extraordinary evidence before jumping to conclusions. ~ Eric ~ My friend ... who figured it out.

I was under the impression that the name 'Jesus' was a fairly common name at that time so whenever 'Jesus' was mentioned, it could have been almost anyone.
Because I am living with one of my parents right now, I sometimes have to endure bible readings in the morning and the utter codswallop I hear is just depressing.

'Jesus' was simply a prophet who was adept at saying just the right things to a largely uneducated and gullible populace..he was an adept scammer too.

'ONE' of them? How about ALL of them.

I'd go for neither.
The Luke account is clearly legendary, as the writer had no way of knowing what happened, and obviously made it up.
However, the Markan thing is frequently misunderstood. In Hebrew culture, the title "son of god" was applied to many, and it simply meant "righteous". It did not mean Jebus actually had a "filial" relationship, (other than allegorical) with Yahweh, (which would have been impossible). Also a "divine being" in Hebrew culture simply meant someone "other than just human", as angels, and some dead "shades", (as in Samuel, when the witch of Endor conjures him, says "I saw a divine being").

Bart Ehrman made a similar point. He said it was pretty strange how Mary 'marveled' over Jesus' knowledge of the Torah when he was just a kid visiting the temple and teaching the teachers, despite having had him when she was a virgin. Didn't she think there was something strange about him right off, or did she not understand how having babies works? And when she dismissed her son as being a nut even later on, again you have to wonder why her visits from angels years prior didn't convince her that there might be something to what her son was saying.

My girlfriend is mad at me. Perhaps I shouldn't have tried cooking a stick in her non-stick pan.
