Yeah well we got a couple of people who have advanced degrees as theological barbars so might as well watch em work the scissors.

I argue against historicity mainly because my Christian theology of "Pauline Israelite" works better without it. Tongue

interesting. Thoughts/opinions?

Richard Carrier and Robert Price appear to be the most outspoken scholars arguing for a purely mythical Jesus.
I plan on reading Price's The Christ-Myth Theory and Its Problems.

The wikipedia article on the Christ Myth theory has a lot of great references....

RE: Jesus myth
That's a really good book to get into the issue (The Christ Myth Theory and Its Problems). I read it last year and was impressed with the intellectual honesty. He admits that some aspects of the historical record are better explained by an historical Jesus than a mythical one. True, he does make some arguments that are a bit of a stretch (my favorite is a much, much later figure's use of the term "brother of Christ" as relevant to whether that phrase applied to James means anything other than the obvious).

In any event, I find the Christ Myth theory fascinating, and there's quite a bit to argue for it. But I still think a real person named Jesus makes better historical sense than the myth theory. I am looking forward to Richard Carrier's next book, though.
