Remember that the object will be traveling at a relatively sedate speed. So Jupiter might get more than one shot at attracting or diverting it, and even after it's past Jupiter's orbit it can still be affected by the big guy's gravity.

Jupiter sheperding the asteroid belt (red) and preventing them/it from heading towards us.
The green parts seem to be Jupiters lagrangian points. I think its easy to figure how this works as well for comets coming in from the outer solar system.
