RE: Laptop or desktop????
I use a wireless mouse with my laptop but the onboard mouse works fine. I just prefer the other.

I bought a chromebook for my bf's mom for a gift--I ended up keeping it and it's actually not half bad. I would recommend it for someone who wants a computer for basic usage.

Any suggestions on what to buy specifically?

This might be good. Smile. Thanks bunches.

Acer is nice for what it is. If all you are looking for is low end PC then these do the job nicely. My mother has one of them and it works for her fine.

The overheating thing actually is a concern. I'm leaning toward the one revs suggested.

Older son is going to look at the specs when he gets a chance later. Smile

But I think it would do nicely.

Just want to say. Bought a Laptop off Tiger Direct for about $227 dollars including shipping etc. Not new, off-lease but pretty good. Won't play many games but it supports windows 7 64 bit and even Windows 10. Had it since 2013 and never had it overheat once and is still running well to this day.

RE: Laptop or desktop????
I just put one of these little guys together a couple of months ago to maintain a virtual presence in one of my client's offices, and I'm very happy with it.

Intel NUC BOXD54250WYKH1 Intel 4th Gen Intel Core i5-4250U with Intel HD Graphics 5000

You just need memory, a hard drive (I opted for solid state to reduce the number of moving parts - "price for all three $498.97"), a monitor, mouse, keyboard and an operating system (if it wasn't for work I'd use some flavor of Linux).
