RE: Las Vegas Shooting: 50 dead, 200 injured
Americans need to consider the UK gun laws, and contemplate why the US has such a high rate of gun deaths and crimes.

The country has one of the lowest rates of gun homicides in the world. There were 0.05 recorded intentional homicides committed with a firearm per 100,000 inhabitants in the five years to 2011 (15 to 38 people per annum).

Police in the UK are not routinely armed, and fatal shootings of police are extremely rare—there were only three in England and Wales in the eleven-year period from 2000 to 2011.

To obtain a firearm certificate, the police must be satisfied that a person has "good reason" to own each firearm, and that they can be trusted with it "without danger to the public safety or to the peace". Firearm Certificates are only issued if a person has legitimate sporting, collecting, or work-related reasons for ownership. Since 1968, self-defence has not been considered a valid reason to own a firearm.

In the last 40 years in the UK, there have been only three mass shootings, with the largest death toll 17 people.

—Americans, if they wished, could easily enact similar federal gun-control laws. Las Vegas's 58 innocent deaths could be the catalyst. But I won't hold my breath.

What can we honestly do about violence?

Healthcare and the Second Amendment are where you find some of the stark differences between America and the other developed societies. Unaffordable healthcare(including mental healthcare) and the ability to buy guns like candy is a combination you rarely find in any other developed country. The combination of those two might constitute the decisive difference when it comes to mass shootings. This is just a hunch.

"I wonder what would happen if the NRA's highest-rated congressman was at work and it was take your daughter to work day. And some crazy motherfucker came in with an arsenal of weapons, all stuff that he got off the internet 3 days ago, and he just came in and shot 10 or 11 people before the police took him down. And one of those people was the congressman's daughter. I wonder what would happen as he's sitting there cradling her body riddled with bullets, her spine has been severed, she looks up as the dark blood keeps pulsing out -- but it gets weaker and weaker. Each breath harder and harder as she drowns in the fluid and she keeps trying to ask her daddy what happened and if she will be okay, pleading with him as the life leaves her eyes. She dies in his arms, do you think the congressman would stop and say, 'Oh honey, small price to pay.'"

There's gotta be an area in between "no guns at all" and "as many high powered fully automatic playthings as you like" where reasonable Americans can legislate a removal of some of the deadlier stuff from society.

I'm not a big gun guy so Question: Is it assumed this guy was firing semi-automatic and just firing very quick? He wasn't just firing automatic, right? He's targeting, at least after the crowd scatters. I guess my point is we're never going to get enough people to give up their semi-automatic stuff.

There's a really good reason for having long guns, coyote control. They're an invasive species and need to be thinned out regularly.

As evidence I met my first coyote in Missouri at 7th and Broadway in downtown St. Louis. Evidently it liked cajun food.

What is meant by "no guns at all"?

Does this phrase mean even hunting guns like 0.22 rifle and shotgun and 0.308 bolt action rifle are to be outlawed?
Or does it mean all guns for "protection"against aggravated assault?

Most developed countries don't allow guns for self protection against other people.
But most developed countries allow hunting and sport rifles.

Who is arguing for a total ban on guns?

You mean like the time you said that insurance companies charge more for people who have a gun in their house not because of the real actuarial data about the increased risk of a claim but because they bought into media propaganda? Are those the type of facts you're talking about that you rely on when making sure you don't misconstrue anything not consistent with your world view?

Quote:Multiple loaded high-capacity magazines were found in the suspected Las Vegas shooter's hotel room, according to multiple law enforcement sources.
Police found the guns and ammunition in the room being used by suspected shooter Stephen Paddock at Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino. Among the guns were high-powered rifles considered capable of penetrating police armor. There were also some handguns in the room. According to Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo, 16 guns were found inside the suspect's hotel room.
Quote:The additional ammunition indicates that the shooting, which left 59 people dead and injured 515, could have been worse, had police not intervened when they did. Police believe that Paddock took his own life.
A modified bump stock rifle was also found, which allows a gun to simulate rapid automatic gunfire. Law enforcement officials are still in the process of examining firearms to determine if they were capable of firing automatically.
Quote:One official said Paddock had a camera mounted in the room, apparently to record himself.
In a separate location searched by authorities, tannerite, an explosive used in target practice, was found, sources said.

Probably very few go as far as "no guns at all," I was just speaking of imaginary extreme points on a spectrum.
