Left Behind rapture
Hi,

We watched a disaster movie called 'Left Behind'. It was biblical and the disaster concerned was the end of days and rapture.

So, the events happened, the chosen were gone and the story played out amongst those left behind to face war, pestilence and all the horrors etc etc. A disaster movie with no survivors long term.

Of course, the old theology questions were rehashed in the script, with apparently decent and reasonable folks left in the unselected group for whatever reason. It gradually became clear to the various characters in the story that there was only one reason they were left behind, they didn't believe. Even a good living pastor of the church was left sitting in his pews because as he said “I went through the motions, read the words, but in my heart I didn't really believe.”

Question? Is this what Christianity comes down to?

I was brought up to understand that being Christian was about loving and respecting others, doing good works selflessly. But in this (fictional) script, loving and being good were not enough. Children were ripped away from their loving and caring parents, with the haunting image of just a pile of clothes in this world and the children gone. Among the survivors there were all kinds of evidence of empathy and caring for each other, common bonding in adversity, grief, perplexity…….

Another question. Which group would we want to belong to? The ones who 'believed' and saved their souls, or the ones who used their freewill to choose what they had believed to be their own path.

A true disaster movie it seems.

D.

RE: Left Behind rapture
Christianity is I think just fascism in allegedly noble disguise. Fascism with thought police, when not only what you do, but what you think can made big brother angry, and punishment is eternal rather than temporal. Or maybe christianity is a good tool for attacking the Other - one speak "Lord hates fags" and one thinks "I hate fags"; christianity is a good way to clothe hate in robes of piety. By hating gay I only do what lord commands says pious bigot, but he fail to mention that "lord" should be read as "my prejudices".

Never I have thought of christianity as something good. At best one is helping others for selfish reasons (heaven), usually though one is just a dick with authoritarian tendencies.

The first revolt is against the supreme tyranny of theology, of the phantom of God. As long as we have a master in heaven, we will be slaves on earth.

RE: Left Behind rapture
It's an apocalyptic cult, same thing with everything else in the bible, there are believers that take the rapture literally, others don't. Others that believe Christians will go through the tribulation (post tribs) others that believe Christians will be raptured before the tribulation - this movie.

It's goofy, it's insane, it's a cult.

I lived through one clown after another making apocalypse/ 2nd coming predictions, they have been 100% wrong.

It's another one of these things that caused me to turn a cynical eye upon these apocalyptic clowns and to dismiss everyone of these so-called prophets.

The whole apocalyptic enterprise makes religion look stupid.

RE: Left Behind rapture
Generic Dispensational Premillennialism Protestant/non-denominational/Evangelical Christians in the film. Dispensational premillennialists believe that Jesus will come again (the Second Coming) and this will signal the Rapture (which owes less to Biblical canon than it does the ideas of a gentleman from the early 1800s by the name of John Darby) in which all true believers will leave their earthly habitation and be taken into Heaven, while the remaining people are 'left behind' to face a seven year reign by the Anti-Christ who will form a one world government. The Anti-Christ will even have a false resurrection to convince people that he is the messiah and he will rebuild the Third Temple in Jerusalem. At the end of seven years, Christ will return to the Earth and cast down the Anti-Christ, Satan, etc. into the depths of Hell and set up a 1,000 year reign in Jerusalem, after which point, Heaven and Earth will be remade.

The book series was pretty bad, but not as bad as the movies. However, it was cheap Bible action porn of a sort. Also there is a third option to your choice of which group to belong to, or at least if my memory of the books and movies is right; those who did not believe and then came to believe after the Rapture (and subsequently get murdered by the Anti-Christ).

Need to think of a witty signature.

RE: Left Behind rapture
I would rather be left behind but are you seriously saying that when the rapture happens Heaven will be filled with naked kids and babies? Why can't they take their clothes? How are they even able to get into Heaven with their Earthly bodies anyway? I thought you had to die first...and like your soul goes to Heaven?

I have so many questions about the rapture because it really doesn't make sense at all but let's face it, who wants to die? Obviously many Christians fucking love the idea of a rapture because you get to go to Heaven without dying which is very very scary so yeah just beam me up Scotty!

I tend to see a lot of older Christians talk about it happening soon or in their lifetime because they're done living their lives, they went to school, had a career, got married, had kids, etc. and now they want out without having to get too much older and sick and dying in a bed or painfully.

But what about all the young people? They never got to grow up or have a family or travel or try different foods or fall in love or have sex...that's just so very sad. What about pregnant women? Do they go to Heaven and give birth to their babies or do the babies also go even though they were not born yet? I just...I just can't wrap my head around such illogical concept and the fact that people actually believe it.

Hold on! We have this whole rapture thing back to front. This could be the solution to the United States of Jesusland.

All we need is an actor who looks like Jesus and some bright spotlights and we can get every last one of the motherfuckers to cheerfully stroll onto B Ark.

All the christians, suddenly gone ?
I'd miss some family members, but on the whole, the world would be a better place.
Can we rapture the Muslims too ?
