Liberalism is bad word for Christians... REALLY?
I have an epic facepalm moment I would like to get off my chest.

As some of you may know from my earlier threads, I have a conservative Christian brother. Like majority of conservative Christians, he tends to demonize liberals and calling Obama "a piece of shit" because of his gradually outspoken support LGBT rights and Obamacare (which is a big NO-NO for conservative because socialism is scary to them). And it seems to me that those gay-loving socialist liberal Christians are not real Christians because he goes on to say: "Liberalism is a bad word for Christians." In other words, "Liberalism is bad because its not true to conservative Christian values.

Wait... What?

But hasn't it always been the liberals who wanted to make the world a better place by changing the world whereas conservatives want to go back to the "good old days" of the totally unjust status quo?

As enlightenment-minded liberals of their time, America's founding father fought the oppression of the British empire for freedom, independence, democracy.

It was liberals who fought against slavery (and slavery was acceptable to the Christian God)

It was the liberals who fought for women's rights and rights of Black people.

And today, it's liberals who continue to fight to defend these past victories as they continue to fight on issues that are relevant today like LGBTQ equality.

So how is it that liberalism is bad when liberalism challenges the socially untenable status quo that's being championed by conservatives?

You have to think to be a liberal, so conservative Christians have a problem...

Sorry -- but you're still buying the lie......................
.....

If you think one of two possible political parties fit your interests - you're either ignoring a big share of their platform -- or you're part of a very small minority.

Political parties tend to change over time -- they continually change their "ideals" -- if they think it will increase the number of votes they get.

At one time the Republicans were the vanguard of civil rights..... It's not seen that way by most today.

As far as I see -- both "liberals" and "conservatives" sold out, a long, long time ago. Party politics tends to preclude any real ideals, any real adherence to fixed principles, and any real semblance of honesty.

If you think a political party is going to "save" everyone -- you're just as deluded as the devout who think their invisible sky daddy is going to "save" them....

It's not just conservative Christians that have an issue. I have been labelled as a Lib-tard or Liberism Yuck by a couple of regular atheist posters on this forum.

The idea of liberalism is bad because it forces people to think beyond what their fathers believed afore time. "Give me that old tyme religion" Nobody wants that new stuff, religion or politics.

Tell him to read his Bible because he obviously hasn't.

"All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had. With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And God’s grace was so powerfully at work in them all that there were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned land or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales and put it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to anyone who had need." - Acts 4:32-35

That's so liberal it's Gasp communism.

And the next step was when a couple claimed they'd sold all their shit and turned over the dollars when they had not so God killed them for not being communists!

Yeah, I figured I'd leave that part out. Big Grin

Atheists sure do seem to know a lot more about what's in the New Testament than many Christians. I'm not gonna go up against the Jews on the OT though.

I'm a former Christian Atheist and I learned more about the Bible from atheists than I did from my any preacher. Because there are many unnerving passages in the Bible preachers tend to scuffle away from.

I think you took my original thread out of context.

I know the Republican party was more liberal in the past but I never brought up political parties in the original thread. And yes I do think it would think it would be better for American democracy if it wasn't just dominated by 2 political parties but actually many political parties each with equal representation. But going back to the original thread, I was not referring to republicans and democrats. Just liberals and conservatives.
