Life likely began 4.1 billion years ago, 300 million years earlier than we thought. The Earth is 4.5 billion years old.

Quote:The carbon contained in the zircon has a characteristic signature — a specific ratio of carbon-12 to carbon-13 — that indicates the presence of photosynthetic life.

If true this pushes photosynthetic life on Earth back at least half a billion years prior to earlier estimates.

Indeed- and they don't know how much older the graphite is than the zircon. They can only age the zircon itself- according to the article, that is.
