Looking for a book...
I'm looking for something that puts each book/gospel of the bible in context as far as what was going on in the society in which it was written at the time and that explains why that gospel would have been relevant to followers in that period. Long shot, I know but any suggestions?

This may be more appropriate in the 'Literature' section. Feel free to move.

I'd recommend "The Bible Unearthed: Archaeology's New Vision of Ancient Israel and the Origin of Its Sacred".

And "Who Wrote the Bible?".

Also, "Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth" is a pretty easy read. There are some aspects of it I don't like, but for the vast most part it's a very good depiction of the events surrounding that time of the bible.

I'm sure there's a slightly satirical book about just that... Forgotten the title though, so just ignore me.

For the NT perhaps Understanding the Social World of the New Testament and A Cultural Handbook to the Bible.

And for the OT The Old Testament: Text and Context.

The only part of the bible I read was the "Vienna new testament", which would fit into what you are looking for.

It was published in the 1990s by a commedian and is a rewrite of the new testament in a Viennese accent told out of the perspective of Jesus being a sterotypical Vienna alcoholic.

Unfortunatly there is no way that the Viennese accent could be translated into English.

Imagine a Scotish alcoholic preaching the bible in a way that reflects on the society of todays Glasgow.
