RE: Macron has won election
I'm glad France had the sense not to make the same stupid mistake. I was worried we'd started a chain reaction that would sink the whole of the EU.

I have a website here which discusses the issues and terminology surrounding religion and atheism. It's hopefully user friendly to all.

We learned of Eormanric's
wolfish mind; he ruled people far and wide
in the kingdom of the Goths. That was a savage king.
Many a warrior sat, bound in sorrows,
expecting woe, often wished
that his kingdom would be overcome.
As that passed away, so may this.

Too much time on my hands, coupled with an unquenchable curiosity about anything and an equally unquenchable desire to shirk work Big Grin

But this one I know from my Old English classes at uni. Might even have translated a bit. I loved that course, was loads of fun, even if hard.

Hehe. I realise now that it's from Beowulf, so perhaps not *so* surprising as it's so famous. I haven't read it myself, though I know the outline of the story... Still impressive to quote it off the cuff.

Nu-huh, that's Deor's Lament. I'm never *this* mainstream. If you're gonna be pretentious erudite, you might as well go whole hogette Rolleyes

We did Beowulf, too, though. But I think it was in a lit class.

Just goes to show how uneducated I am Tongue Starts with the tribulations of kings, ends up moaning about not having a job. Truly a fitting poem for the times Hobo

Any time, really. Though nowadays it's more likely to end up with him moaning about not having a girlfriend and how dare the bitch leave him, damn her to hell Angry

Plus, as we both know, my dear moron, for all the troubles of the world, ours are what pokes us in our mind's ribs and keeps up at night.

And I didn't even have cherry blossoms to count this year Sadcryface

my sleepy mind
counting cherry blossoms...

RE: Macron has won election
So glad and relieved that he got elected ! Took me 4 hours to go voting at the consulate, but it was definitely worth it !
Even though Macron won with a large majority, the fact that Marine Le Pen got 34% of the votes is still worrying. In 2002, only 20% voted for the FN at the second round of the election, that's a 14% progression in 15 years, the far right is getting more and more popular.

After WWII the right wing/fascist movement was always quite prominent in France, it just became more apparent right now. There is a reason Le Pens dad was so well known before she took over.

Before WWII it too wasn't fringe if I correctly recall P. Burrin "Fascisme, nazisme, autoritarisme".
