Exclamation Man dies after police use Taser at Universal Studios
The story of little badges carrying big electric toys! Dodgy

April 22, 2011
A man who was causing a disturbance outside Universal Studios in Florida died after being shocked with a Taser stun gun by off-duty police, US authorities have said.

Adam Spencer Johnson, 33, was said to have been acting irrationally when the five officers approached, police said.

The officers used a stun gun because Johnson was "violently" resisting arrest, said Sgt Barb Jones.

Mr Johnson became unresponsive on the ground and was later pronounced dead. (Continues @ BBC)

Disgraceful! Sad Rest in peace, Mr. Johnson.

I'm not even surprised. American police are world famous for being violent about everything.

Will those who say that "the police shouldn't use tasers" voluteer to apprehend violent criminals themselves, in the way they say that the police should use?

I have a big issue with tasers because I think they are used fairly indiscriminately and they more dangerous then is generally claimed. However, in this instance, based on the story presented in the article, I'm not sure what else the cops were supposed to do. The fact that the person died is tragic but are the cops supposed to risk their own safety to apprehend the guy?

Cetaceaphile - just because there are famous stories does not mean they are all true. We've certainly had some incidents here and some things not to be proud of but the vast majority of American police are normal people doing a totally thankless and dangerous job. In 2010 there were 162 cops killed in the line of duty in the US. As of April 10, there have been 52 killed in 2011. source. Being a cop in a country where there is a lot of crime and a lot of guns is not an easy job. Maybe think about the whole story before making a comment like that one.

I think "non-lethal" weapons can themselves be lethal under certain circumstances. Tasers don't surprise me, given that electric shocks can be used to start someone's heart.
My biggest hatred is for microwave weapons that are being developed for this purpose. I mean c'mon ...

Just because your government allows people to own weapons doesn't mean it's ok that the police constantly maim and kill unarmed criminals/suspects.

Okay Cetaphile, are willing to take down violent criminals with your bare hands and willing to risk your life and health just so they won't get hurt?

I have dealt with very violent men on a few occassions and, personnally, if someone is that out of control, I don't care if the police subdue him with a bazooka.

"Constantly"????

You need a clue, or maybe some facts.

You need violent police for violent criminals.
