Medical Profession Gone Crazy
Okay, this is going to be a kind of long post, but I have to vent about some fucktards in the medical profession. I have a very good friend who was recently diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) at the age of 30. She has had health issues which include seizures since she was 15, so is not stranger to dealing with doctors. Prior to her ALS diagnoses she had a stroke during a surgery and was suffering from some loss of function in her right arm and leg. It was actually her physical therapist that first suggested that she may have ALS. This is where the fucktard behavior starts.
She asked her neurologist about the potential for ALS and his repsonse was (and I am paraphrasing slightly, but this is the gist of it) "No, you can't have ALS. There is no way GOD would give you AVM and ALS." AVM is what she was suffering from, which caused the seizures and stroke. Now this doctor was at a MAJOR medical center. She eventually went to see another specialist, who actually made the correct diagnosis.
After the diagnosis, she was at the physical therapist office, the one that actually suggested she may have ALS. She told the PT that she did, in fact, have ALS and burst into tears. Like most people who are just diagnosed with a fatal, untreatable illness, she was rather upset. The conversation with the PT was as follows:
PT: It will be okay. You're saved right?
My Friend: {stops crying slightly} Um, no, I'm an athiest.
PT: Oh...well that explains it.
That was the end of the conversation. My friend was in such shock, she couldn't even think of a response.
So, yea, when did people in the medical profession become complete idiots!

What an arse!

She should've kneed him in the 'nads and then said, "I'm sorry, that must've been one of my seizures"

It is a major medical university in Tennessee. Yes, it is in the south, but I would still expect basic medical professionalism.

Well actually it's not exactly just "unprofessional".
With the physician it looks like malpractice, (negligence), and the PT exhibited unprofessional conduct. The friend probably has better things to worry about, but you could file complaints with the state licensing boards for both, just so they understood their behavior was unacceptable. I assume the friend has found other people they trust to teat them. The upcoming months, (hopefully years), will require a close working relationship with some people she respects, and trusts. If the delay in treatment had consequences, ya got yerself a lawsuit.

My response to that therapist would have been "Fuck you, asshole."

RE: Medical Profession Gone Crazy
Bucky Ball is on the right track.

The PT was definitely unprofessional, but as long as they provided proper care then the most you could probably do is file a complaint.

But, the neurologist can be in some trouble. Especially if they are in breach of duty since physicians and many other medical professionals have a legal obligation to act and keep to a certain standard of reasonably care when performing acts that could cause harm to others; such as a proper/improper diagnosis. As for whether or not it's negligence or malpractice (a type of negligence); it would probably be best to recruit some legal aid to decide that... As far as I know, there needs to have been harm or damages done in either case. Negligence is, in short; failure to exercise standard or reasonable care provided and involves harm as a result of carelessness and not intentional harm. Malpractice is, also in short; failure to exercise standard or reasonable care provided and involves harm as a result of a preventable medical error; which includes inaccurate and/or incomplete diagnosis.

As for religion in the clinic; from my experiences, all the doctors I have worked for seem to keep the discussion of religion to their breaks at worst and never with patients.

That's all I can really say without going beyond my scope of practice and education...

I hope that you and your friend have better experiences with medical professionals in the future.

RE: Medical Profession Gone Crazy
I had this written, and decided to see where this went.
Actually this is more serious than you might realize. First of all, the Neuorologist probably has an academic appointment, if the center is a university, and therefore probably a professor, if a med school is attached. He is supposed to be a scientist.
This action was unethical, and if the powers that be heard about it, he would be reprimanded. I suggest you get someone who is good at writing serious letters, and cc a complaint, describing his diagnostic "method" to :
a. the chairman of his (Neurology) department
b. the administrator of the hospital
c. the medical chief of staff of the medical center
d. the head of Quality Assurance at the center, (there may be a separate one if this happened in a clinic setting, for the clinic system)
e. the legal department at the hospital
f. the legal department at the university
g. the Dean of the Med School
h. the President of the U.
i. the Neurology Association for the State.
j. the State Board of Medical Practice

Your indignation was very reasonable. He needs his hand slapped. He can *think* that crap, he can't say it, to a patient, and he certainly cannot treat patients in a way that does not comply with the community standards.

Got to remember this one, I'll call it an "involuntary reflex". Smile
