Megachurches
Never been to one. But once a few years ago I was eating at a subway restaurant next to a mega church. I noticed an armored car picking up a couple very large bundles out the side door. Just a small moment in time I'll always remember.

RE: Megachurches
There's an interesting combination on M-40 a couple miles south of Allegan Michigan.

Two churches. One, right on the 2 lane highway, a cinderblock building reminiscent of a one room school house. Built in the late 1940's. Somewhat run down, paint fading, weeds growing up out of the asphalt parking lot (about 25 cars worth). A hand painted, wooden sign out front proclaiming "all welcome,"....

50 yards South is an access road, with a large, elevated high intensity LED display sign. It graces the fresh two lane drive that winds back to the huge modern monstrosity that sits 1/8th of a mile behind the little church by the road. It appears to have about 20 acres of paved parking, with high intensity light poles throughout......

Ya gotta wonder. What kinda weird ass rivalry goes on between these two whackmobs????

(Whackmobs plural of whackjob.....)

My late wife had a farm in Allegan for quite a few years. Are you from around there?

Must be a pretty new church as I don't recall seeing it. We lived in the Kalamazoo area for awhile. Left there around '95.

As to the rivalry, I'm sure they appeal to quite different demographics. Some people really enjoy being a member of what I call the Tattered Remnant, the few, the proud, the correct. Others want to be part of somethin' happenin'. They want safety in numbers, a certain amount of excitement and/or entertainment. I'm sure the underpaid or possibly volunteer pastor of the little church at least occasionally decries the dilute, worldly, permissive, and ultimately sterile offerings of the behemoth in his back yard. I'd be surprised if the pastor of the megachurch ever mentions him.

Yup we're about 6 miles southeast of Allegan.

The megachurch hass been there about 10 years if memory serves. It's just before the first big curve in M40 going south on the west side...

Could it be that the tiny, older church is the original version of the newer, palatial god-bothering palace? I know that where I live, sometimes the flashy new edifice uses their older building for boy scout meetings, or yoga classes or Lions/Rotary/Apex—anything to squeeze a few measly bucks rental out of it. Theists never miss the chance to make money out of their properties, regardless of their size or condition; every little bit helps "God's cause".Dodgy

Nope.. The one out front is an off-brand congregational type... The behemoth is of course, baptist...

I fault theists for many things, but not maximizing the utilization of their properties. Every property owner does that. It's especially necessary for churches when you consider that their utilization of their facilities for their own purposes generally sucks -- 100% (hopefully) utilization for a few hours a couple days a week, the rest of the time it just sits there requiring maintenance and security and heating / cooling and such. That's one reason the megachurches try to make them "destinations" or "hangouts" with coffee or fast food, adjacent apartments or retirement homes using the church itself as a social hangout, etc. It's also why smaller churches will often rent the building out as meeting space for outside purposes, although this is less comfortable for fundamentalists who live in terror of someone doing something "ungodly" or "worldly" in the confines of their holy, sanctified building. That in turn leads to hilarities like renting to the public and then trying to refuse to rent to certain groups or for certain purposes such as, say, a gay wedding.

I could see the ideological divide between a smallish old church and a big new mega-church to be based around aging demographics. The little blue-haired old ladies wanting old-school music from early or mid 20th century, none of those lights or synthesizers or new songs, just a mind-numbing waltz through "Old Rugged Cross" or "There Is Power In The Blood" followed by a fire and brimstone message by an old pastor with one foot in the grave about the Old Testament version of god and how he and a very select few will ever make it past those pearly gates. (Did you put something in the offering bucket today brothers and sisters?)

Some of those that won't make it past those pearly gates are those false prophets down the road there in their big shiny lit-up church, cue the Book of Revelations and the condemnations of The Whore of Babylon...

Yeeeeeeeah....I don't suppose that the Church of the Rising Penis (all rise) (where I am the head priestess) qualifies yet as a megachurch. We'd have to erect a bigger version to reach that classification.

RE: Megachurches
A few people have mentioned Osteen. His church is somewhat in my neck of the woods; he took over what used to be called "The Summit" which is where the Houston Rockets used to play basketball. A friend once told me that to be a member of his church one had to turn over a banking account number for automatic withdrawals. May not be true but sounds true in spirit.

As far as his wealth, that's practically porn for his supporters. YOU TOO can be blessed by the holy whatever etc etc!!!
