Misunderstood lyrics
Not sure if this could be a fun thread or not, but everyone has at least one song where they thought they knew the lyrics only to find out later how ridiculously wrong they were.

For me, there is this song called Mr. Big Stuff and it was featured in a popular commercial years ago. It was catchy and the lyric was, "Mr. Big Stuff, who do you think you are? Mr. Big Stuff!" But I was convinced the ladies sang "Mr. Fista, who do you think you are? Mr. Fista!"

My kids gave me so much crap and they still do to this day whenever we catch someone in the family singing a wrong lyric.

I also thought Bryan Adams once sang "That was the summer I did a 69" and in Grease I thought John Travolta sang "The chicks will cream for Greased Lightning."

What lyrics have you mangled?

Update: I guess I was right with Grease after all.

Pretty sure you're right about the grease lyrics. It gets edited on TV sometimes. Laughat

This one is an intentional one for me, but whenever I hear P.O.D.'s youth of the nation I sing "we are, we are, the euthanization!"

I hope that the world turns, and things get better. But what I hope most of all is that you understand what I mean when I tell you that, even though I do not know you, and even though I may never meet you, laugh with you, cry with you, or kiss you, I love you. With all my heart, I love you. - V for Vendetta

Ok, good, I wasn't crazy. I always thought they said that on Grease but the one time I tried to prove it to someone when it was on it said they will scream and I was like, what?

Years ago (many years ago) when Tone Loc came out with Funky Cold Medina our neighbor and her daughters would sing it as Funky Cold Potato. Blink

Shouldn't that be Funky Gazpacho? Blink

RE: Misunderstood lyrics
The scene:
20-something years ago.
Crowded train from London to Paris.
Listening to Japan on my Sony Walkman.
Murikan girl (ah, Becky, we will always have Paris), opposite me starts chatting and we swap audio devices.

She gets into the song and starts singing loudly.

The song is Ghosts by Japan.

The line is:
"Once I was so sure, now the doubt inside my mind
Comes and goes but leads nowhere"
but she is expecting "ghosts" not "doubt".

So what comes out, as her subconscious corrects her error, is:
... and remember she is singing at some volume...
"Once I was so sure, now the goat inside my mind
Comes and goes but leads nowhere".

The correct lyrics:
When the room is quiet, the daylight almost gone
It seems there's something I should know
Well, I ought to leave but the rain, it never stops
And I've no particular place to go

Just when I think I'm winning
When I've broken every door
The ghosts of my life
Blow wilder than before

Just when I thought I could not be stopped
When my chance came to be king
The ghosts of my life
Blew wilder than the wind

Well, I'm feeling nervous, now I find myself alone
The simple life's no longer there
Once I was so sure, now the doubt inside my mind
Comes and goes but leads nowhere

Just when I think I'm winning
When I've broken every door
The ghosts of my life
Blow wilder than before

Just when I thought I could not be stopped
When my chance came to be king
The ghosts of my life
Blew wilder than the wind

RE: Misunderstood lyrics
Wasn't me -- but I once met somebody who thought the lyrics to Bad Moon on the Rise was "There's a bathroom on the right"....

Yeah -- people would sing about that.......

Cindy Lauper She Bop. I was a kid when that was on the radio and it was many years later as an adult that I realized the real meaning of the song.

Another one is Hozier Take Me To Church. The firat few times I heard it I thought it was a cheistian song. Then I really listened to it and realized what he was really meaning.

"If we are honest—and scientists have to be—we must admit that religion is a jumble of false assertions, with no basis in reality.
The very idea of God is a product of the human imagination."

RE: Misunderstood lyrics
Way back in the 1970s there was a group called Pilot they were a one hit wonder with song called, It's Magic.

For years I thought the line was

Oh oh oh, it's my dick you know, never believe its not so...

I truly thought the dude was singing about his dick.

But as if to knock me down, reality came around
And without so much as a mere touch, cut me into little pieces
