More than a wee bit slow
I bought the Zappa album Sheik Yerbouti in 1979, and I still have it.

It took almost thirty years before it dawned upon me what the album title really meant. God, I felt stupid.

Have any of you had similar experiences?

I have that in vinyl as well! It took me from 1976 when it came out until 1992 to realize that the Eagles were singing about cocaine, in their song, "Life in the Fast Lane".

RE: More than a wee bit slow
There are several times where I have not realized what something meant until many years later. Mostly it's things said in movies that I missed as a kid (typically sexual references). One thing that was recent was what World War Z was about (the movie with Brad Pitt). I went into it expecting a great zombie flick (which I think it was) and not much else, but as we are sitting in the theater watching it, my wife notes that it is clearly a movie about the benefit and necessity of vaccinations. I realized that was actually rather obvious, especially considering the humanitarian work that Pitt is typically engaged in. I simply wasn't looking for that message but there it was, staring me right in the face in the form of a zombie apocalypse.

Oh, and I have also just completely fucked dialogue or lyrics up too. That will really change the message and as a consequence, I watch all my movies and shows with subtitles on now.

For example, Garth Brooks' song "Shameless" (shut up, I grew up in the south and I sill like Garth Brooks) at one point says "I'm shameless!" but I could have sworn he sang "I'm shaving!" and that is the way I sang it for years. I won't say how many years because that is even more embarrassing.

If only it could have been more effective.

"Life In The Fast Lane"

He was a hard-headed man
He was brutally handsome, and she was terminally pretty
She held him up, and he held her for ransom in the heart
of the cold, cold city
He had a nasty reputation as a cruel dude
They said he was ruthless, they said he was crude
They had one thing in common, they were
good in bed
She'd say, 'Faster, faster. The lights are turnin' red."
Life in the fast lane
Surely make you lose your mind, mm
Are you with me so far?

Eager for action and hot for the game
The coming attraction, the drop of a name
They knew all the right people, they took
all the right pills
They threw outrageous parties, they paid heavenly bills
There were lines on the mirror, lines on her face
She pretended not to notice, she was caught up
in the race

Out every evening, until it was light
He was too tired to make it, she was too tired
to fight about it

Life in the fast lane
Surely make you lose your mind
Life in the fast lane, everything all the time
Life in the fast lane, uh huh
Blowin' and burnin', blinded by thirst
They didn't see the stop sign,
took a turn for the worse

She said, "Listen, baby. You can hear the engine
ring. We've been up and down this highway;
haven't seen a goddam thing."
He said, "Call the doctor. I think I'm gonna crash."
"The doctor say he's comin', but you gotta pay him cash."
They went rushin' down that freeway,
messed around and got lost
They didn't care they were just dyin' to get off
And it was life in the fast lane
Life in the fast lane

I get to decide what my life looks like, not the other way around.

And so do I, though I'm not from the south. I'm from miles upon miles north of the arctic circle.

I used to think I also had friends in low places, but giving it a second thought, I probably am one of the friends in low places...

In the awesome four (or was it six?) hour special on the Eagles is a short story about how this song title came about. It was spawned during a car ride with a dealer friend. The friend coined the phrase during this high speed trip road trip conversation saying: " yeah, it's life in the fast lane."

Fantastic documentary of the group of it high times to rebirth.
A MUST see!

You have to be odd to be #1.
