Given his preference for the works of long dead authors perhaps he was using 'sophisticated' in its earlier sense of corrupt, adulterated, falsified rather than the later refined, discriminating, cultured. I am surprised only that he was willing to admit it.

There is that. I've followed enough of his arrogant and pedantic drivel to last a lifetime. He's one of those who equates (or confuses) unintelligibility with profundity.

I spent decades of my adult life trying to make sense of theism, and developed an elaborate God concept. But I now consider atheists who were intelligent enough to reject God outright as smarter than I was. I should never have taken up the burden of proof myself.

I feel your pain. I jumped on board the local church for social interaction, not realizing the ongoing pernicious influence that religion would have. Mom and Dad were both fed up with religion. Dad was a Protestant and Mom was Roman Catholic and their respective families hated each other.

Its like Richard Dawkins, Richard Dawkins loves rocking other peoples boat, but when someone rocks his boat... that is how many people are here. They can dish it out, but they can't take it.

That was quite the jump in topic, CW. Do you have anything specific in mind? Who "rocked his boat"? In your opinion, of course.

Do yourself a favor and just ignore him.

Because if you don't agree with him then you're the problem and he already "won" his argument. It doesn't matter how reasonable you are with him or how many scientific papers you cite or even how versed you are in a particular topic, if it doesn't align with the voice in his head, then you lost.

In that regard he's a typical theist. NO amount of evidence will sway his thinking. EVER.

Also you don't need to read Mein Kampf to reject Nazi ideology, so writings of religious top dogs of centuries past are no different.

That's true. At the end of the day, they all share the same fatal flaw: zero evidence for any deity.

Exactly. But since when theists care for evidence?

All of the current crop of theists fall under this banner, I feel.

Say what you like about Heywood Jablome, The Q Continuum, and Call_of_the_Wild, they were at least capable of carrying on a coherent conversation. Meanwhile, I suspect that theBorg, socialistview, Celestial_Wonder, and so on are either out and out trolls or suffering from legitimate mental disorders, and in neither case is there any point in engaging them.

After months of off-again and on-again exchanges, he stopped quoting Aristotle, Aquinas, and Augustine long enough to tell me that I had no business calling myself an atheist unless I had a theology degree and rejected it. That's when he called me a "naive atheist." I asked him what he meant by that. He replied that he was a sophisticated atheist because he had read Aristotle, Aquinas, and Augustine and had rejected their teachings while still considering them valid. But the bottom line was that I was naive because the god he didn't believe in was a more sophisticated god than the god I don't believe in. Make sense? Only to him.

That's some fancy moves there. The Christian apologists would be proud.

I have a website here which discusses the issues and terminology surrounding religion and atheism. It's hopefully user friendly to all.

My god can shit on anyone!

NOTE: Member, Tomasia uses this site to slander other individuals. He then later proclaims it a joke, but not in public.
I will call him a liar and a dog here and now.

It sounds like he may have been a wee bit confused about the meanings of "reject" and "valid".

Sounds like your classic intellectual snob. Needed to run somebody else down to compensate for his own rampant shortcomings. Likely didn't understand most of what he yapped about half so much as he let on. When you're good you don't need to flaunt it.
