RE: NASA finds new type of life form.
Apparently the paper is being heavily critisized as really bad science. Many believe NASA in its desparation to be relevant started a media storm around a really shaky find. It's not necesarily false, but the paper leaves much doubt.

That is the scientific process. It has to stand up to the scrutiny of other scientists first and foremost. If it doesn't, it will die a wimpering death. If it does, then science has an opportunity to learn more about the processes of life. Either way something will be learned and YEC's will have both a heyday and a headache.

So, what else is new?

Thunderf00t on the "new life".
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FWAYBgl69gw

Basically what Thunderf00t is saying is that NASA really over-hyped
the discovery during the press conference (part of which I posted
earlier in the thread). The actual paper describing the study seems
to provide quite less exciting data. "How arsenic insinuates itself into
the structure of the biomolecule is unclear, and the mechanism by which
such molecules operate is unknown." Yet NASA is going around boasting
that they have found NEW LIFE (such as I was doing when I created the
thread) when what they really did was some what less exciting. In a nut-
shell, NASA took a sample from Mono Lake, starved the organisms of
phosphate while leaving it in an arsenic rich environment, and the
organism continued to live and grow, the conclusion they draw is that
somehow the organism adapted to using arsenic rather than phosphate.
The press conference boasts about the organism using arsenic as the
backbone of its DNA, which is really what all the hype was focused
around, yet that claim is merely a speculation and a guess with little
evidence AS OF YET to back it up. The lady in the press conference
claims that all life we know of runs off of CHNOPS (Carbon, hydrogen,
nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorous, and sulfur) which is apparently quite
a weak statement as Thunderf00t points out in his video.

NASA humored us, probably to gain public acceptance and praise, since
they are currently lacking a lot of support from the general public.

Maybe the lesson that by NASA learns will be, "we've got to stop being so #@&% cocky." Tongue

That is why science works so well. Screw-up and you will get caught. Jumping the gun with a screw-up and you will have a lot of egg on your face to make you double cautious next time. You will also serve as a warning to other scientists who will take more care of covering all bases before making a press announcement.

If that happen in religion, this would be a very different world.

Absolutely. This is also one of the many reason I love science so much.
Carl Sagan wrote beautifully of science's self-correcting tendencies in
A Demon-Haunted World:

"There are no forbidden questions in science, no matters too sensitive or
delicate to be probed, no sacred truths. That openness to new ideas,
combined with the most rigorous, skeptical scrutiny of all ideas, sifts the
wheat from the chaff. It makes no difference how smart, august, or
beloved you are
. You must prove your case in the face of determined,
expert criticism. Diversity and debate are valued. Opinions are encouraged
to contend - substantively and in depth."

- Carl Sagan "The Demon-Haunted World"

How does this self-correcting system work? Extraordinary claims comes
along boasting of an interesting scientific discovery, other scientists read
into it, discover the flaws, and set out to crush our dreams in the name
of truth. This recent episode is a great example of that, science's built in
error-correcting mechanism. It would be wonderful to keep going on
believing that NASA has discovered a mega-organism unlike anything we
have ever seen, but that would be false, and science doesn't like false.
