At some point history becomes history. Could they dress as Vikings? Romans? Mongols? Pilgrims?

Students should have general idea about why Nazis aren't best suited model to such event. Or maybe their education is even more limited? Wouldn't be really surprised though, I too didn't learnt much about Asia in school.

There have been people who I work with who have never heard of Hitler and one who was not even aware of the second world war.

Similarly, I'm constantly reminded of my lack of awareness of the history and the battles that have shaped this region.

I'm just about to go to a Philosophy Group meetup where the subject will be Popularism. There is a right-wing sentiment in Europe; there's Trump; there's Brexit. Many of the economic conditions are ripe for another wave of fascism / nationalism / exceptionalism. The US is maneuvering its troops around the region in what seems to be a deliberate echo of old-fashioned anti-China, British imperialism... Taiwan will be the first suffer if it all kicks off.
And, of course, the internet is full of Nazi documentaries.

Is it any wonder that the children would want to study this phenomenon?

Role-play ... I can understand that. A parade as part of that? Yup, that was poor judgement but one thing's for sure ... the children will be learning a heck of a lot from this experience.

I get that too, a constant reminder to check my own context and biases. Being both a relatively young country, and the decisive victor, the Second World War is a looming and ubiquitous part of the cultural myth of the United States. So I don't expect people of other nations on the other side of the planet to be anywhere near as familiar with this piece of history, let alone school children. But that excuse only gets you past casual ignorance, that doesn't excuse the level of premeditation required to get this parade project off the ground. The adults should have known better, or at the very least, have done the minimum amount of investigation required to give them pause.

I expect almost everyone to be familiar with such event as WWII, but it may be my focus on history speaking. Consequences of this war were felt in many places on the globe after all.

As for myth - here too it is significant and mixed with yearning for utopia which pre war Poland supposedly was (it really, really wasn't).

Even in that it pales in comparison to the seminal catastrophe that was The Great War. Almost the entirety of the bedrock of the Second World War was laid by the ending of the first. But ever here, from an American perspective, it is the later war whose influence and importance holds sway. Why? Because the United States wasn't a deciding factor in First World War, nor was it a fight against a opponent so easily labeled as 'evil'. There was no Pearl Harbor, no storming of Normandy, no Auschwitz, no Manhattan Project; only the messy web of alliances, the failing and decrepit monarchies, and the bombed out muddy ruin of the Somme. In the United States at least, it is WWII that hold almost all of the cultural cache, while it's precursor is relegated to obscure history.

Depends. As a general rule of thumb, I'd try to avoid venerating groups that both glorified and participated in genocide; a group who's identity was so entwined with hatred of the other.

So yeah, participating in a faux KKK rally complete with white hoods and a burning cross, with cardboard dummies in blackface hanging from nooses attached to a tree? Also probably a bad idea.

Truthfully -- I'd rather get captured by NAZIS than Vikings or Mongols....

Those NAZIS would just put a bullet in your head, or gas you...

The Vikings and Mongols would get creative figuring out ways to snuff your ass......

And they all involve sharp, primitive weapons that are going to really, really hurt....

Or make you starve to death in hellish atmospheric conditions. Not all Nazi victims were so "lucky" to die quickly.

Humans do stupid things cause they're stupid. Your answer is as obvious as unhelpful. Article in OP has better one lack of education. It's still leave room for further explanation but it isn't non-answer.

RE: Nazi Parade by School Children in Taiwan
True enough.....

Your odds got exponentially worse if you had the misfortune of being taken prisoner by NAZIs -- if you were anything other than white, blue eyed and blonde haired........

...

The Vikings and Mongols on the other hand probably didn't give a shit... If you weren't on their side - you were fucked....

Edit to add --

And -- not every German was a NAZI - and a barbarian....

Vikings an Mongols rather define the term barbarian.........

---
You never saw a Viking florist, clock maker or brewmeister..... Germany was full of 'em...
