Quote:Both books suggest Church money raised through donations intended for charitable operations was diverted to help pay for lavish renovations of senior clergy's grace-and-favour apartments.

The Vatican has not denied the veracity of the recording of Francis venting his fury, or the authenticity of the documents.

Instead, officials have framed the revelations as old news based on problems which Francis has already addressed through his reforms, a clampdown on profligacy and a clean-up of the Vatican bank.

The Italian journalists could have declined to attend the trial and forced the Vatican to initiate what would have been complex, potentially embarrassing, extradition proceedings.

The Vatican is prosecuting these guys on what is basically old news. Fuck the Catholic Church.

Vatican court upholds prosecution

Quote:Vatican City (AFP) - A controversial trial of two investigative journalists and three others involved in the latest Vatican leaks scandal began Tuesday with judges rejecting an appeal for the charges against one of the reporters to be dismissed.

The charges against the two reporters do not exist on the legal statutes of Italy. The article also states that the two reporters and the three Vatican insiders all face eight years in prison.

So... The Vatican has it's own prison?

The Vatican (officially the Vatican City State) is not part of Italy, it is a sovereign state with its own (archaic) laws.

Skepticism is not a position; it is an approach to claims.
Science is not a subject, but a method.

That must be where they put Cardinal Law then?

There's a picture of his "prison" in this article.

Gasp NO! What if it reproduces?!? One of it is bad enough! The Vatican isn't all that immune from the Italian legal system. The Italian police investigated the money laundering issue awhile back, much to the harrumph of the RCC. Francis supposedly addressed the issue; we shall see how that works out. I would like to see that every church-going Catholic got an eyeful of the shit that goes on that level, instead of blindly worshiping. That house of cards would collapse, flat (pfft, as if). I guess us atheists should come up with a plan for where the money should be spent. Since I came up with this idea, I should get 90% of the proceeds. Nah, I have enough of my own. Let's auction off all that art and feed the people of the world, and quit pumping them full of shit about condoms, etc.
