I suppose I meant what qualifies as 'adult' beyond the physical and legal definition. What defines our age categories in terms of perception.

Again, it is generally accepted that at the age of eighteen, legally or not, you are expected to exhibit a caliber of responsibility beyond that of a child.

I agree. Does this mean that eighteen year olds aren't teenagers? Of course not. This section is not about what constitutes adulthood, but merely the age in which the word Teen is ascribed to after the number... If you catch my drift NeMo. As soon as people turn twenty, no matter how their emotional state is, they are not teenagers.

Adulthood does not start with 18, adulthood starts when you act responsible. This can start with 17, 35, or never.
Law needs an ageline to give people more responsibilities and duties and rights. With 18 an average person is considered to be done with school (the average person does not go to uni, just saying) and have worked for one or two years. Therefore a person of 18 years old is considered to know about the real world enough to be entrusted with new rights and duties.

I think my question was not "what is a teenager" and more "what is an adult." And it was a question in social theory. I ponder things like "is adulthood strictly defined by age, physical maturity, behavioral maturity?" and then I try to figure out at what point other people, or society as a unit, makes such distinctions. I especially wanted from the point of view of "teenagers," a category invented in the modern age by advertising companies defining a new target age group. What do they consider an adult, and at what point is it 'uncool' or 'creepy' to associate with one?

Take that up with U.S society. At the age of 18, people are entrusted with the responsibility of choosing future world leaders and government officials, their ability to live on their own without the support of their parents, they can, on their own terms and by their own will, fight and kill for their country. At the age of eighteen, you are hardly of the same expectation as a 15 year old.
