RE: Now that you're older.....
I see myself as lucky. I find what I do worthwhile and enjoyable; I like where I live. I'm generally happy (although achieving that state took a while).

I'm very worried about the world and amazed to see how different life is for kids now than for me as a kid. I'm nervous especially at the moment because I'm about to launch my kid off to college, and I'm anxious about how he'll handle things. I hate that fundamentalists of various stripes feel so threatened that they are increasingly taking to violence. I believe that the violence is going to get worse before it gets better. If it ever does get better: I wouldn't be surprised if we are on the verge of another dark age.

It's strange to describe myself as a happy pessimist, but that would be the most accurate.

I had always believed the prophecies that by now we would all have flying cars and food replicating machines, as well as living for a couple of hundred years, But at 70 years old I no longer plan on more than another 10 years, nor do I even expect to eveer actually be in even a self driving car.

World around me is filled with primitive, nationalist chest beating and religious indoctrination, which I suppose should make me sad. Honestly though I care not, as I can leave this pathetic parody of a country anytime I wish.

The first revolt is against the supreme tyranny of theology, of the phantom of God. As long as we have a master in heaven, we will be slaves on earth.

RE: Now that you're older.....
When I was very young, my context for understanding the world was Tom Brokaw viewed through the lens of American public education.

I watched the news every weeknight for two reasons: One, my mother was hot for Tom Brokaw, so that's what the TV was turned to. Two, I wanted first dibs on turning the TV to something else after. So with that motivation, I saw coverage of the embassy bombing in Beirut, the Ozone Hole being argued about, Challenger, Exxon Valdez, the AIDS-plosion, Chernobyl, Tienanmen Square, Dukakis riding around in a tank, the fall of the Berlin Wall, Oliver North calmly lying to congress, Ross Perot, Black Monday, PanAm 103, the first Gulf War, and who knows what else I can't remember right now.

Through all of it there was a consistent narrative. America is good; wealth is good and achievable; communists and socialists are bad, but don't worry, we'll get them all soon; the political process is hard and best left to the professionals, so just vote and then watch what happens; the US military is fighting for freedom.

Now that I'm older, I know that that story is mostly false. The America that shows up on the news would qualify as psychopathic if evaluated as an individual. Wealth is out of reach to almost the entire world, and hoarding resources depresses living standards. Most centrally planned economies didn't pursue the goals of socialism, so even calling them that is misleading (I'll grant that central planning is a bad solution). The "American interests" defended by the US military are the interests of wealth and expanding corporations; The political process is not difficult, it's just ugly and occasionally arcane. Anyone willing to wade into the pig pen can wrestle with the hogs, as soon as they learn to work the latch.

The most important thing I have learned is this: Every media outlet has an agenda, and it can be seen in the stories they choose to tell and how they tell them. By choosing a media outlet, be it news or entertainment or a confused amalgam of the two, you are literally choosing your own programming. You will think about what they say and probably repeat it. You will feel the way they slant the story. Be mindful when you turn on the TV. What you watch will become part of you.

I went to rate you for this post and was pleasantly surprised to see I have already rated you. Bowing

I feel so much, and yet I feel nothing.
I am a rock, I am the sky, the birds and the trees and everything beyond.
I am the wind, in the fields in which I roar. I am the water, in which I drown.

Nope...that got too maudlin.

Simply...I have never fit into the world around me. I am more accepting of, and less surprised, by that. Undecided
