O Canada!
Facepalm

So they changed our national anthem...again, to make it gender-neutral...again.

They changed the line 'in all our sons command' to 'in all of us command'.

When our anthem was originally adopted in 1908 (I think) the line was originally gender-neutral 'thou dost in us command'. It was changed around the beginning of the first world war to 'in all our sons command' to honour the soldiers going off to war.

What is most shocking to me is how many people I've talked to that are shittin' kittens over this. There are so many people really pissed about this, I just don't get it.

The only thing that annoys me about this is how it was done, the way it was run through the government in a very underhanded way.

Of course now I'm seeing articles about if the government can change that, how long until they take 'god' out of the anthem. Well maybe they should, but I'd actually have a bigger problem with that because it'd completely fuck up the chorus what would they change 'god keep our land' to?...'people keep our land' ? That just sounds stupid. In any case if they do, they should consult the people not just run it through parliament, the government doesn't OWN our nations symbols the people do.

Besides the word 'god' really doesn't have any useful meaning any more, might as well be singing 'dog keep our land' or 'bob keep our land'...

Thoughts? Anybody else have a national anthem or symbol of their country that they'd want to change?

Oh Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all of us command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!
From far and wide,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
We keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

"We keep our land glorious and free"? Consider

Still feels weird.

But I ran the anthem through my head a few times, certainly makes more sense, since we are the ones "standing on guard for thee..."

Still I imagine peoples' heads exploding if we ever tried to change it.

The existence of Canada's Human Rights tribunals says otherwise :/

Maybe it's because I've spent most of my life moving from place to place and never really having a "home" but a nation having it's own theme song always struck me as kinda weird. I mean at least here in Canada if you don't watch hockey you will hear it what? 2 maybe 3 times a year? Yet everyone gets in a tizzy. Always struck me as kinda odd, but I'm kinda odd so what do I know.

Meh, the french version is better Tongue. The rhymes are richer and it matches the tempo a bit more smoothly. Considering it was written before the english version, which is mostly a translation, thats not exactly surprising.

Ô Canada ! Terre de nos aïeux,
Ton front est ceint de fleurons glorieux !
Car ton bras sait porter l'épée,
Il sait porter la croix !
Ton histoire est une épopée
Des plus brillants exploits.
Et ta valeur, de foi trempée,
Protégera nos foyers et nos droits,
Protégera nos foyers et nos droits.

Since that's only the first verse of the anthem here are the rests. If you are pretty good at translating french from english, we you will notice the massive influence of the Christian religion in the french canadian society ofhte beginning of the century. That last verse explicitly mentions Jesus Christ and the Christian faith as the most central element of national unity and success.

As of today, while the English version has been modified twice, the French version hasn't changed at all. But everybody knows that the most "canadian" version of the anthem is probably the bilingual one. It sounds like this. The only positive thing about all versions of the Canadian anthem is that, at least in my parts, you only hear it at the beginning of hockey matches and major sporting events and that's pretty much it. I personnaly, can barely sing the first part without reference in either language.

Ô Canada ! Terre de nos aïeux,
Ton front est ceint de fleurons glorieux.
Car ton bras sait porter l'épée,
Il sait porter la croix.
Ton histoire est une épopée
Des plus brillants exploits
God keep our land, glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

Yeah, if my memory serves me the Quebecois adopted 'O Canada' so they wouldn't have to sing 'god save the queen/king'. I remember in grade school having to sing BOTH anthems every morning.

I didn't know that, I'd just assumed all these years that both anthems were the same.

RE: O Canada!
I'd be more concerned with the "God keep our land glorious and free!" line.

BTW, I understand the usage of the word "sons" to originally refer to its meaning of 'descendant' (Old English) or 'offspring' (Old Irish) but absent the intent of defining any specific gender. Another grammatical bone of contention—particularly by feminists—are words like 'chairman' or 'policeman' whereby the "-man" suffix originally referred to the non gender-specific 'member of the species Homo sapiens' or 'the human individual as representing the species, without reference to sex; the human race; humankind'.

Then again, I shouldn't talk; the Aussie national anthem is an unmitigated piece of 19th century crapola, written by a Scottish(!) composer...
Verse 1
Australia's sons let us rejoice,
For we are young and free;
We've golden soil and wealth for toil,
Our home is girt by sea;
Our land abounds in Nature's gifts
Of beauty rich and rare;
In hist'ry's page, let ev'ry stage
Advance Australia fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing,
Advance Australia fair.

Verse 2
When gallant Cook from Albion sailed,
To trace wide oceans o'er,
True British courage bore him on,
Til he landed on our shore.
Then here he raised Old England's flag,
The standard of the brave;
"With all her faults we love her still"
"Britannia rules the wave."
In joyful strains then let us sing
Advance Australia fair.

Verse 3
While other nations of the globe
Behold us from afar,
We'll rise to high renown and shine
Like our glorious southern star;
From England soil and Fatherland,
Scotia and Erin fair,
Let all combine with heart and hand
To advance Australia fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing
Advance Australia fair.

Verse 4
Should foreign foe e'er sight our coast,
Or dare a foot to land,
We'll rouse to arms like sires of yore,
To guard our native strand;
Britannia then shall surely know,
Though oceans roll between,
Her sons in fair Australia's land
Still keep their courage green.
In joyful strains then let us sing
Advance Australia fair.
It's the most outdated, archaic farrago of snivelling, jingoistic drivel you'll ever read. And I can guarantee that not one single Aussie out of the 24 million of us can sing the thing word perfectly. Or even at all LOL.

Yeah I definitely wouldn't trade ours for yours, it's a bit of a mess.
