RE: O Canada!
Not a fan of national anthems, mottos, or flags, frankly. The emotions around them seem so manufactured and convenient for people in power.

But at least the US national anthem tells a story and involves some suspense (will the flag still be there? be sure to tune in to the next stanza!).

In 1956, during the Cold War, the USA switched from the unofficial, but aspirational and inspirational, motto "e pluribus unum" (out of many, one) to the horrid "in god we trust."

O Canada is relatively easy to sing, so it sounds better in many performances...it tends to drag, though.

RE: O Canada!
I'm not familiar with a lot of national anthems. Most of them are lame and the lyrics are just plain idiotic. Some sound like a funeral dirge or a high school theme song. But the best national anthem by far is the French national anthem. No other national anthem comes close to La Marseillaise. I'm not even French, I'm a silly American but when I hear it I wanna stand up and salute the French flag! Viva la France!!

Meh, the french version is better Tongue. The rhymes are richer and it matches the tempo a bit more smoothly. Considering it was written before the english version, which is mostly a translation, thats not exactly surprising.

Ô Canada ! Terre de nos aïeux,
Ton front est ceint de fleurons glorieux !
Car ton bras sait porter l'épée,
Il sait porter la croix !
Ton histoire est une épopée
Des plus brillants exploits.
Et ta valeur, de foi trempée,
Protégera nos foyers et nos droits,
Protégera nos foyers et nos droits.

Since that's only the first verse of the anthem here are the rests. If you are pretty good at translating french from english, we you will notice the massive influence of the Christian religion in the french canadian society ofhte beginning of the century. That last verse explicitly mentions Jesus Christ and the Christian faith as the most central element of national unity and success.

As of today, while the English version has been modified twice, the French version hasn't changed at all. But everybody knows that the most "canadian" version of the anthem is probably the bilingual one. It sounds like this. The only positive thing about all versions of the Canadian anthem is that, at least in my parts, you only hear it at the beginning of hockey matches and major sporting events and that's pretty much it. I personnaly, can barely sing the first part without reference in either language.

The French version is offensively religious. Drinking Beverage

RE: O Canada!
Well, I debated whether to post Whitney Houston singing the US national anthem at the superbowl back in 1991 because of the circumstances of the Golf War crap but when I watched it again I remembered how fabulous it was. It's such a hard song to sing for the average person. She knocked it out of the park.

This is waaaay off topic....

Geez, I never saw anyone's voice with that kind of power degrade so completely in 20 years. She really did a number on her pipes. My husband worked backstage at a Whitney Houston concert in LA back in 1995 and he was amazed and shocked at the drug dealers and low lifes she surrounded herself with and this was just 4 years after she sang this national anthem. Later, when she died, everyone said her husband got her hooked on cocaine but my hubby thinks it may have been the other way around. Anyway, here she is in better days.

That was great. Opera singers do well when they sing national anthems. I don't read music so I don't know if the Canadian athem is one octave or two. Anyone know? I'm pretty sure the US anthem is two octaves which makes it harder to sing.

An opera singer I know told me that most of the time pop music is one octave, Broadway musicals and light operas are two octaves, and classical operas are three octaves and above. This is the difference between the three musical styles.
