The Welsh sure know how to sing. Some of the best voices in the world!

He is deformed, crooked, old, and sere,
Ill-fac’d, worse bodied, shapeless every where;
Vicious, ungentle, foolish, blunt, unkind,
Stigmatical in making, worse in mind.

RE: O Canada!
In the US self-styled "patriots" make a big noise about anthems, pledges, flags, and other such foofaraw. What hardly any of them seem to understand is that these things weren't handed down with the Declaration of Independence; and the Founding Fathers would have scoffed at the importance some people attach to them today. Mostly these symbols didn't even start to become a big deal until the late Victorian Era, post Civil War.

* Independence Day (July 4th) didn't become a "national holiday" until 1885, and then only for federal employees.

* There was no one official flag design before 1912.

* We didn't even have a "national anthem" until 1931.

* The Pledge of Allegiance had no official standing prior to 1942.
In a rather piquant irony, the words "under God" in the Pledge -- that get modern evangelical "patriots'" panties in a twist when someone suggests taking them out -- weren't in the original. They were added in 1954, at the behest of the Knights of Columbus, a Catholic organization that evangelical Protestants of the time despised.

* "In God we trust", a Civil War affectation, didn't become the "national motto" until 1956.

And a lot of the same people who would gladly shoot anyone they caught burning the American flag or dragging it on the ground, don't seem to have any problem with making it into motorcycle helmets, jackets, rugs, and other things.

IMO it's all a crock of male bovine excrement.

Our US national anthem is a bunch of awkward doggerel, set to the tune of a mediocre 18th century drinking song, written by -- another irony -- a British composer. If it went away tomorrow I wouldn't shed a tear. "O Canada", with or without gender, is a musical masterpiece, by comparison. Tongue

I'll take issue with this one, at least, that you dismiss too casually. Its importance was handed down since...July 4 1776. "National holiday" or not is a side issue of the least importance; the way you put it seems to imply it wasn't until 1885 that it became a "big noise." Everyone pretty much realized at the time, this was a big noise.

John Adams at the time: “I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty; it ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires and illuminations from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.”

(Not crazy about the God Awmighty stuff, but still)

It also wasn't written until 1892 so we went 116 without it and it was written as a submission to a contest in a boy's magazine for the 400th anniversary of "Columbus day". The end goal was to drive sales. The author, Bellamy, was a Baptist preacher who evidently saw no need to include god in a secular pledge; he was also a Christian socialist Tell that to the fundies and watch their heads explode even more as they learn that it's not only the Catholic god they are under but they are keeping alive the words of a socialist.
