OK Baptists to be compassionate towards gays
Interesting read in the DO today regarding Oklahoma Baptists. Is this a little damage control? It seems in order to keep up with the ever changing world and to keep the de-conversion rates down they now pledge to be compassionate towards gays BUT, dammit, they will stand against homosexuality! Facepalm

First of all...why can't they just choose to NOT stand against homosexuality if they want to be compassionate towards homosexuals? You know... the logical way to think. I think we all know the answer to that.

I find it embarrassing for the religious to try and bend their rules versus just de-converting and burying their archaic morally challenged religion altogether.

Nothing new here, just more hypocrisy from the deluded.

We're going to make scourges and whip them just like Jesus did at the temple.

Nonono. Gays. GAYS. While there is some overlap, that is NOT the same as BDSM!

Why do social conservatives seem to keep lumping together all the "we're at least pretending this isn't us" categories?

All they have left is damage control, back-petaling, and denying what the Bible itself says.

If religion does somehow manage to keep existing it will only be because they have evolved to keep up with current societal norms. Just like they've always done.

RE: OK Baptists to be compassionate towards gays
If homophobia hadn't become socially unpopular, there'd be no way that these Baptists would suddenly, magically be becoming "compassionate".

Honestly, I feel for them. A bit. They've painted themselves into a metaphysical corner. They believe they've got to keep denegrating gays on account of this passage and that passage in the book they've convinced themselves is supernatural and they'll go to hell if they don't obey it, but deep down they're starting to feel kinda not-right about it because they're part of a society that's waking up to how that's a really shitty way to behave towards other human beings. The two positions are contradictory and logically impossible to resolve with each other, but because of their faith they're stuck trying to square the circle, and so out of their own imagined eternal self-interest they have to explain to other people that those other people are broken when it's really them that are broken but they really still love them even when they don't and...

... wait.... out of their own self-interest...

Yeah, okay, I don't feel for them any more.

OMG I just realized! Religion is full of spiritual playas! This is spiritual negging!

And in a related story, Westboro Baptist Church says they will now chant, "Please go to hell, fags!" in keeping with the new policy of compassion. Film at 11.

Makes me want to date a Baptist. A touch of realism always enhances the role play. :-)

Let's see, they've backed down on:

1.Slavery
2.Killing people for working on the Sabbath
3.Killing people for using the Lord's name in vain
4.Killing people for adultery
5.Forbidding people from wearing polyester/cotton blends
6.Declaring anyone unclean after sitting in a chair after a menstruating woman
7.Not eating anything "un-kosher"
8.Not having square beards
9.Animal sacrifice
10.Women not teaching men
11.Men with wounded penises or no testicles not being allowed in church
12.Cutting appendages off or plucking them out if they offend you
13.Giving a thief your belongings

And so on, but it is all divinely inspired after all.......
